The Per Diem Clinical Nurse Supervisor is responsible for overseeing nursing operations and staff supervision on an as-needed basis, supporting high-quality patient care across the organization. This role requires a minimum commitment of two 12-hour shifts per month and fosters collaboration, respect, and effective communication with providers, nurses, clinical staff, and organizational members.

This position is eligible for applicable shift differentials.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE:


Staffing and Scheduling:

  • Conduct staffing check-ins at designated shift intervals.
  • Assign staff based on patient acuity and unit requirements (RNs, LPNs, CNAs, ancillary staff).
  • Support flexible coverage needs including weekends, holidays, and off-shift hours as required.

Administrative and Leadership:

  • Assist with probationary and annual staff evaluations and support performance action plans.
  • Participate in interviewing and hiring nursing candidates as requested.
  • Communicate management concerns to the Director of Nursing promptly.

Clinical Oversight:

  • Collaborate with the medical team to optimize patient care experiences and outcomes.
  • Provide expert nursing care and escalate clinical concerns appropriately.
  • Coordinate closely with clinical and admissions teams for patient services.
  • Supervise patient admissions, documentation, preparation, and clinical assessments.
  • Manage patient discharges, internal transfers, and medication processes effectively.
  • Address atypical discharges and behavioral challenges through timely interventions and crisis management.
  • Implement harm reduction strategies to minimize patient risks.
  • Provide trauma-informed and person-centered care.
  • Maintain a safe environment conducive to patient education and family engagement.
  • Model culturally sensitive practices in patient care and staff interactions.

Quality, Safety, and Compliance:

  • Ensure adherence to medication management and controlled substances protocols.
  • Investigate and promptly resolve discrepancies.
  • Regularly inspect medication storage and administration areas.
  • Maintain medical supply inventory and manage reordering processes.
  • Enforce infection control, safety measures, and cleanliness standards.
  • Supervise laboratory practices ensuring regulatory compliance.

Education and Staff Development:

  • Support new hire orientation and preceptor programs.
  • Conduct or participate in staff in-services and nursing education initiatives.
  • Ensure staff competency in clinical procedures, including injections, point-of-care testing, diabetic management, ECGs, phlebotomy, and withdrawal management.

Communication:

  • Ensure clear team communication and accurate shift hand-offs.
  • Maintain supervisor logs, staffing records, and incident documentation.
  • Role model professional, compassionate, and effective communication to staff.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Ability to assess medical needs and provide direct patient care.
  • Mobility throughout patient care areas, occasionally lifting medical equipment/supplies up to 50 pounds unassisted.
  • Effective verbal communication related to patient care.
  • Proficiency with computers, phones, and general office equipment.
  • Accurate and timely updating of medical records, occasionally while stationary.


QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited RN Program, with current NY State RN license.
  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN); MSN required within 5 years of role acceptance.
  • Membership in IntNSA, ASAN, or APNA required.
  • Certified Addictions Registered Nurse (CARN) or Psychiatric Mental-Health Nursing Certification (PMH-BC) within 1 year.
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
  • Minimum of 5 years of nursing experience, including addiction and co-occurring mental health disorder treatment.
  • Knowledge of evidence-based practices for Substance Use Disorders.
  • Familiarity with healthcare standards: OASAS, ASAM, Joint Commission.
