About the Department

The Kent County Administration Office is seeking a driven and collaborative Communications Intern to help develop and implement communication strategies to inform the public, highlight Kent County services, and build positive relationships with the community we serve. This position works closely with department and county leaders throughout the organization to help share the stories behind our services and their impact on the community. 

Get hands-on experience in traditional and digital communications, including but not limited to:
  • Social media
  • Digital newsletters
  • News releases
  • Annual reports
  • Videography and photography
  • Website content management

This is a unique opportunity to build professional experience in government communications while making a meaningful impact in the community. The Communications Intern will gain practical skills in content creation, media relations, storytelling, and strategic communication planning. Once completed, the Intern will leave with a portfolio of work to support future career goals. 

A successful internship candidate should have:
  • Experience creating and managing digital content for social media and other platforms, with a strong understanding of engagement strategies
  • Familiarity with tools such as Canva, Adobe Creative Suite, or similar design and video editing software
  • Excellent written, verbal, and public-speaking skills
  • Creative thinking and problem-solving abilities
  • Ability to work collaboratively and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment

Hours are flexible, with an anticipated commitment of at least 10 hours per week. The internship is based out of the Kent County Administrator’s Office, located in downtown Grand Rapids.

Minimum Qualifications

The ideal candidate will be enrolled in a bachelor’s or associate degree program, preferably in Communications, Journalism, Mass Communication, Graphic Design, Digital Media, Public Relations, Marketing, or a related field.
