Position Summary: The Self-Contained Special Education Teacher is responsible for co-planning and co-teaching in a self-contained classroom that includes students with disabilities. This role involves adapting the curriculum to meet the unique learning needs of students with disabilities and implementing their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). This position requires a compassionate, patient, and highly collaborative educator who can facilitate an inclusive and supportive learning environment for all students. Key Responsibilities: o IEP Development and Implementation: o Develop, write, and review all required IEPs for students on the caseload. o Ensure all accommodations, modifications, and goals outlined in each IEP are accurately implemented within the self-contained classroom setting. o Monitor, track, and collect data on student progress towards their IEP goals. o Instructional Strategies: o Adapt and modify the curriculum to make it accessible to students with diverse learning needs. o Utilize differentiated instruction, small-group instruction, and one-on-one support to help students achieve their academic goals. o Integrate assistive technology and other supportive tools as needed. o Personal Care and Independence: o Provide students with assistance for personal care, including feeding, toileting, and other hygiene needs, as required by their IEPs. o Assist students with dressing, mobility, and the use of adaptive equipment, as outlined in their service plans. o Develop and implement strategies to promote student independence in self-care skills, coordinating with parents and other team members for consistency. o Collaboration and Communication: o Communicate effectively with the general education teacher, sharing student progress and planning strategies. o Work with a multidisciplinary team, including administrators, school psychologists, speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists. o Maintain regular, transparent communication with parents and guardians to discuss student progress and share updates. o Provide guidance and supervision to paraprofessionals working with students in the classroom. o Behavioral Support: o Implement and monitor Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs). o Employ trauma-informed practices and positive reinforcement systems to create a safe and supportive learning environment. o Work proactively to de-escalate behavioral issues. o Classroom Management: o Help maintain an organized and sanitary classroom environment. o Assist with supervising students during various activities, including lunch, recess, and school outings.
Qualifications: o Bachelor's or Master's degree in Special Education or a related field. o A valid state teaching license with a Special Education endorsement. o Experience working with students with moderate to severe disabilities is preferred. o Ability to perform physical tasks such as lifting, positioning, and assisting with student mobility. o Excellent communication, organizational, and interpersonal skills. o A compassionate, flexible, and patient disposition.
