DESCRIPTION OF WORK GENERAL DUTIES: Performs semi-skilled manual labor in maintaining grounds and related areas, and additionally performs journeyman level work as a grounds department equipment mechanic. SUPERVISION RECEIVED: Works under the general guidance and direction of a grounds supervisor and/or administrator(s).
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Performs landscaping and grounds care tasks including seeding, sodding, planting, earthwork and fine grading; waters, weeds and mows lawns; prunes trees and shrubs; rakes leaves; hauls brush and rubbish; removes snow and ice; maintains parking lots and playgrounds; moves furniture, musical instruments and related equipment; installs snow fences; repairs student desks and chairs; minor repair of fencing; fertilizes lawns; sprays for insects and weeds; light repair of irrigation systems; operates trucks, tractors and various yard equipment; serves as the mechanic for grounds department which includes the service, repair and operational maintenance of engines, transmissions, clutches, brakes and all other equipment components; supervises student help; may serve in absence of supervisor; performs other related work as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATONS
KNOWLEDGE: Working knowledge of the care and operation of manual and motorized groundskeeping equipment including trucks and tractors; proper care of lawns, flowers, trees and shrubs. Working knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment of the mechanic trade.
ABILITIES: Ability to perform manual labor; perform a variety of gardening and grounds keeping tasks; to operate equipment; to follow directions; to deal effectively with supervisor and fellow workers. Ability to work from blueprints, plans and sketches; to estimate time needed to complete equipment maintenance projects; to perform acceptable equipment repair work as a mechanic; maintain effective working relationships with others. Proficient in equipment operation and Grounds keeping profession. Ability to repair and maintain light and heavy equipment used by department.
EDUCATION: High school graduate / GED. Must possess at least one of the following certifications: Building Operator Certification (BOC), Commercial Pesticide License, CDL and/or Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI).
EXPERIENCE: Three years of experience as a groundskeeper and one year experience as a mechanic, or any equivalent combination of education and experience.
