Position Title
Assistant Track & Field Coach
Location
Triton High School, Dodge Center, Minnesota (serving the track & field program for grades 7–12)
Supervision
Reports to the Head Track & Field Coach and the Activities Director at Triton High School.
Purpose
To assist in the development, implementation, and coordination of the school’s track & field program with a focus on jumps (horizontal and vertical), with the goal of maximizing athlete performance, personal growth, academic success, and team and individual achievement.
Key Responsibilities
Assist the head coach in planning, organizing, and conducting daily practices specifically for the jumps events (long jump, triple jump, high jump, pole vault).
Develop drills, progressions, and training plans tailored for horizontal and vertical jumps (including approach, take-off, flight, landing, technique, and strength/conditioning).
Provide individual technical instruction and feedback to athletes in jumps events.
Assist with meet preparations, event assignments, warm-ups, and coaching during competitions for the jumps events.
Help maintain equipment, pits, runways, mats, poles, and other implements used in jumps, ensuring safety and readiness for practice and competition.
Maintain accurate records of athlete performance (distances/heights), progression, attendance, and event entries.
Collaborate with other event coaches (sprints, hurdles, throws, distance) and the head coach to integrate jumps into the overall team strategy and scheduling.
Promote a positive team culture—encouraging good sportsmanship, academic achievement, attendance, and behavior in alignment with Triton High School's Profiles of a Graduate.
Communicate regularly with athletes, parents, assistant coaches, and athletic department staff regarding progress, expectations, schedule, and meets.
Assure compliance with school, district, league, and state athletic association rules, safety protocols, and risk-management procedures.
Qualifications / Desired Skills
High school diploma required; bachelor’s degree preferred.
Prior experience as a track & field athlete, coach or assistant, ideally with jumps events.
Demonstrated knowledge of the mechanics, training methods, and safety considerations for long jump, triple jump, high jump, and pole vault.
Ability to design and implement conditioning, plyometric, and work with the OMC strength training team to develop a plan for our jumpers at Triton High School.
Strong interpersonal and communication skills: able to motivate athletes, work with parents and staff, and foster a positive coached environment.
Strong organizational skills: able to plan practices, track athlete data, coordinate equipment and events.
Familiarity with the rules and regulations of the Triton School District and the MSHSL.
Commitment to student-athlete academic success, sportsmanship, and personal development.
Working Conditions / Terms
Seasonal stipend position (per master contract) for the spring track & field season.
Will require after-school hours, practices, weekend meets, travel to away competitions.
Outdoor and indoor work in variable weather conditions, on track, runways, pits, and field facilities.
The position may be renewable annually depending on performance and program needs.
Performance Evaluation
The assistant coach will be evaluated by the Head Coach and Athletic Director according to the school’s coaching evaluation protocol.
Key evaluation metrics may include athlete improvement in jumps events, student-athlete participation and retention, program organization, equipment management, compliance with policies, and contribution to team morale and culture.
