Salary Range: $63,000-$78,200   Exempt   -   Benefits include 401(k), PTO, and Vacation!!!

GENERAL SCOPE: The shift supervisor has the broad responsibility of translating the objectives, policies and procedures of the Jewish Home and nursing department into effective action as well as maintaining the standards of nursing care and practice of the nursing department on the assigned shift.  Responsibility is centralized in three major areas:  individual patient care management, management of the provision of nursing services and personnel management.  Responsible for staff supervised on shift and overall situations for residents and families.

EDUCATION / QUALIFICATION: Current NYS Professional Registered Nurse License.  Must be knowledgeable of nursing and medical practices and procedures, as well as laws, regulations and guidelines that pertain to long-term care.  Must possess leadership and supervisory ability and the willingness to work harmoniously with professional and non-professional personnel.  Must possess the ability to plan, organize, develop, implement and interpret the programs, goals, objectives, policies and procedures, etc., that are necessary for providing quality care  Must be willing to seek out new methods and principles and be willing to incorporate them into existing nursing practices.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

MANAGEMENT OF THE PROVISION OF NURSING SERVICES:

  • Initials internal investigations for resident care issues.
  • Receives and gives facility shift report.  Makes unit rounds to assess resident care needs and staff needs.
  • Determines optimal utilization of staff for the delivery of nursing services throughout the shift.  Procures additional staff when indicated.
  • Obtains medications and/or supplies to ensure the provision of resident nursing care.
  • Works collaboratively with the nurse manager of each unit to maintain continuity of resident care.
  • Maintains a safe environment for residents and staff-one conducive to positive health cares and comfort in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Consistently monitors the quality of care provided to residents on assigned shifts.
  • Supports and participates in on-going educational and research programs of the nursing department and the Jewish Home.
  • Maintains close working relationship with other departments providing support service to the residents during the shift.
  • Serves as the facility spokesperson during assigned shift.

INDIVIDUAL RESIDENT CARE MANAGEMENT:

  • Assesses and evaluates changes in the health status of residents.
  • Develops and implements an interim plan of care in consultation with the physician when appropriate.
  • Communicates changes in resident status to appropriate persons and places.

PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT ON ASSIGNED SHIFT:

  • Makes recommendations to VP of Nursing Services or Assistant Director of Nursing regarding staffing needs and patterns.
  • Completes performance evaluations on assigned staff as well as reviewing evaluations with individual staff.
  • Works with the staffing coordinator to ensure appropriate staffing patterns.
  • Assists new staff members in the adjustment process and facilitates an appropriate orientation program.
  • Evaluates the individual capabilities of each staff member and takes appropriate action if discrepancy is recognized between capability and performance requirement.
  • Identifies problems, provides appropriate counseling, instruction or experience.  Is authorized to take disciplinary action when indicated.
  • Is the primary clinical nursing resource for nursing staff on assigned shift.
  • Receives minutes from monthly nurse management leadership meetings and disseminates the appropriate information to staff.
  • Seeks continuing education opportunities for professional self-development.
  • Interviews nursing staff for the shift when necessary.
  • Plans for and directs regularly scheduled staff meetings.
  • Makes recommendations to the staff and organizational development department regarding the learning needs of staff on assigned shift.
  • Responsible for overall resident and family satisfaction on off shift and weekends.
  • All other job duties as assigned.

 EXPERIENCE: Three (3) years clinical experience in long-term care nursing preferred.  Acute care acceptable.  Previous leadership responsibilities.
