SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-7, in accordance with Kanawha County Substitute Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level
EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the Human Resources Department in coordination with building administrators.
JOB SUMMARY: The substitute will assume and carryout the daily duties/activities of the regular teacher by providing instruction, classroom management, and support for students.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
Report directly to the school office to sign in with the secretary and clock in
Plan to arrive early if possible to pick up and review the lesson plan and your assignments for the day
Ask questions if you are not familiar with the location or position
Take attendance according to school procedures
Follow the lesson plans and normal schedule as closely as possible
Be flexible as assignments may change throughout the day
Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate for the maturity and interests of the students
Work with individuals, small groups, or the entire class to support teaching of content
Refer behavior problems or questionable situations to the appropriate school administrator
Ensure the safety and supervision of students at all times
Prepare a written statement of completion of lesson plans, notable changes to the normal schedule, behavior issues, etc. for the regular classroom teacher to review upon his/her return
Make reasonable preparations for the next day (grade papers, record issues, return classroom to original arrangement, etc.)
Perform other duties as directed by the principal
Be present at the school at least seven and one-half consecutive hours each full day of employment in both elementary and secondary levels. This includes the thirty minute, duty-free lunch period. You may be asked to cover or assist in another classroom during the teacher’s planning time.
Sign out in the office and clock out before leaving
QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university
Minimum 2.5 cumulative GPA
Three (3) professional employment references
Valid WV Department of Education Short Term Substitute Permit

WORK ENVIRONMENT: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. Most commonly, the educational setting is indoors with outdoor settings for recess and field trip activities. The noise level in the work environment is low to moderate (20-60 dB). Exceptions include gymnasiums as well as vocational/technical laboratories where the noise levels may be moderate to loud (60-90 dB).
