Description

The Medical Assistant (MA) provides prescribed medical treatment and personal care services to patients within the MAs scope of practice or as deemed competent in a clinical setting under the supervision of a health care provider. All Juniper Health employees will adhere to the Patient Center Medical Home (PCMH) model and work to ensure that patients of all ages receive comprehensive, coordinated and patient-centered whole patient care. The employee will maintain confidentiality at all times.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Interviews the patient to determine the medical problem/complaint/condition, medical histories, medications, and routine health maintenance, and documents it appropriately.
  • Obtains and records the patient's vital signs, as well as height and weight.
  • Assists the health care provider with patient examination as needed.
  • Reviews the health care providers orders, lab requests, or follow-up needs with patient.
  • Documents services performed for billing purposes.
  • Dresses wounds and gives enemas, douches, alcohol rubs, and massages.
  • Applies compresses, ice bags, and hot water bottles.
  • Observes patients and reports adverse reactions to medication or treatment to medical personnel in charge.
  • Administers specified medication, orally, via nebulizer, or by subcutaneous or intramuscular injection and documents appropriately.
  • Collects samples, such as urine, blood, and sputum, from patients for testing and performs routine laboratory tests on samples.
  • Assembles and sterilizes equipment and supplies.
  • Maintains supplies, including stocking and ordering new supplies and disposing of expired or damaged supplies.
  • Responds to patient telephone inquiries by evaluating and responding to the patient's problems and questions.
  • Follows up with patients regarding missed appointments, lab results, including the scheduling of any additional tests.
  • Coordinates referrals for patients through insurance and other physician offices.
  • Assists as needed in billing/registration office with scheduling appointments, receives money for bills, keeps x-ray and other medical records, performs secretarial tasks, and completes insurance forms.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Work is typically performed in a clinical office environment.

  • The physical demands required of the position are representative of those required of comparable professional positions and must be met by the employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to communicate, operate equipment, observe details at a close range, be in stationary or moving positions, and occasionally lift or move up to 25 pounds. TRAVEL:

  • Travel to JHI sites and/or external meetings and trainings may be required.

OTHER:

  • The MA is expected to work and be available during regular business hours, however, extended hours and weekend work may be required.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Education level: High school diploma or equivalent; CMA, Nurse aide or EMT certification desirable
  • Experience preferred
