Situated in Niles, Michigan, the Niles Energy Center is a state-of-the-art 1.08-gigawatt gas-fired combined-cycle power facility that delivers reliable, efficient power to the regional grid. Anchored by two high-efficiency GE 7HA.02 gas turbines and a steam turbine generator, the plant maximizes output while minimizing emissions through the use of advanced heat recovery steam generators (HRSGs) and a low-NOx auxiliary boiler. Opportunity Summary
The Maintenance Mechanic is responsible for the ongoing maintenance of the 1,085 MW combined-cycle plant, including executing the facility’s planned maintenance program, performing unplanned and emergency maintenance activities, and supporting normal plant operations as needed. The Maintenance Mechanic reports to and supports the O&M Manager through the Maintenance Planner and works collaboratively with the rest of the plant management team. The role also provides technical input on O&M activities, plant improvement projects, contract obligations, owner requests, and third-party work. The Maintenance Mechanic ensures professional communication with, and provides support to, regulatory personnel, owner representatives, vendors, visitors, and other stakeholders.
Your scope of responsibility as Maintenance Mechanic includes the following primary functions:
- Perform day-to-day mechanical maintenance activities to keep facility equipment in safe operating condition. Tasks include disassembling and reassembling equipment, inspecting internal parts for wear, checking tolerances, and replacing components as required.
- Conduct preventive and minor maintenance on all plant equipment as directed by the O&M Manager and in accordance with plant policies.
- Perform basic welding, machining, and pipefitting work as needed to support maintenance and repair activities.
- Assist in planning, scheduling, and conducting preventive, corrective, and overhaul maintenance on all power plant equipment.
- Supervise vendors performing work on-site and report activity status to the O&M Manager.
- Support material management and procurement processes, including obtaining quotations, preparing requests for proposals, managing service contracts, performing bid comparisons, and creating purchase requisitions or blanket purchase orders.
- Maintain accurate records and enter data into the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for corrective, preventive, and compliance maintenance activities.
- Understand and comply with the plant’s lockout/tagout system, electrical safety requirements, and other safety, regulatory, and operational procedures.
- Keep tools, shop machines, and equipment in good working order. Perform routine housekeeping to ensure plant and building areas remain clean and organized.
- Maintain a valid driver’s license and obtain certification for operating plant mobile equipment. Safely operate vehicles and consistently follow safe work practices.
- Perform other duties as assigned by the O&M Manager or Maintenance Planner.

Working Relationships
The Maintenance Mechanic reports directly to the Operations and Maintenance Manager and receives general direction from the Plant Manager. This role involves interfacing with contractors and original equipment manufacturer (OEM) personnel to ensure necessary support and coordination.
Physical Requirements and Working Conditions
Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, climbing stairs and ladders, working from elevated platforms and walkways at varying heights, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds.
Power plant environment that may involve entering confined spaces, crawling through narrow areas, and handling hazardous materials, with exposure to fumes, extreme temperatures, and noise. Work may include high heat near equipment and varying outdoor weather conditions.
Some duties may require the use of protective equipment, which can include hard hats, safety glasses, and eye protection, air masks/respirators, ear protection, chemical suits, flame-resistant clothing (FRC), hot gloves, high-voltage protective gear, and fall protection. Fit testing for respirators may be required. Strict smoking restrictions apply in and around the facility.
Fitness for Duty
All personnel will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program, which includes a post-offer physical examination, drug screening, and post-employment random drug screening.
Work Schedule
The Maintenance Mechanic works a standard Monday to Friday day shift schedule, ensuring consistent plant operation and support during regular business hours. This position will also occasionally necessitate extended working hours and flexible shifts as needed, including weekends and holidays, in response to schedules, workload demands, and plant conditions. Periodic callouts or “On call” status may also be required.
Compensation
This position offers a base pay rate ranging from $35 to $45 per hour, along with an annual performance bonus.
Core Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for a skilled Mechanic with experience in power generation operations and maintenance, coupled with a proven ability to contribute effectively to team success and consistently meet performance standards.
- Associate degree in Plant, Mechanical, Electrical, or Process Technology preferred; equivalent technical training or relevant industry/military experience may substitute on a year-for-year basis.
- Extensive hands-on experience in power-generating or industrial maintenance, preferably as a plant mechanic, millwright, or in a similar role.
- Strong knowledge of power plant operations and maintenance practices, including preventive and corrective maintenance of pumps, valves, compressors, turbines, and auxiliary systems.
- Proven ability to inspect, disassemble, repair, and reassemble mechanical equipment, verify tolerances, and replace worn or defective parts to maintain safe, reliable operations.
- Skilled in welding, machining, pipefitting, and use of precision measuring and diagnostic tools.
- Committed to strict adherence to safety and regulatory procedures, including lockout/tagout and electrical safety.
- Proficient in maintaining maintenance records and using a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS) for preventive, corrective, and compliance tasks.
- Experienced in supervising vendors and contractors, ensuring work quality, safety, and compliance with plant requirements.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively and support planning, scheduling, and continuous improvement of maintenance activities.
- Must possess a valid, unrestricted U.S. driver’s license and ensure it remains in good standing at all times.
