Job Function and Scope:
The Medical Dosimetrist is responsible for designing and calculating precise radiation treatment plans in accordance with the radiation oncologist's prescribed course of therapy. These plans are developed with mathematical accuracy to ensure the optimal delivery of radiation while safeguarding healthy tissue and preserving organ function.
In developing each treatment plan, the dosimetrist considers tumor pathology, tumor volume, and the dose-limiting structures surrounding the tumor. Using advanced computer systems and imaging technologies-such as CT, MRI, PET, ultrasound, planar radiography, and fluoroscopy-the dosimetrist creates treatment plans and determines accurate radiation field placements.
Working collaboratively with the radiation oncologist and medical physicist, the dosimetrist ensures that the treatment plan fulfills the physician's prescription and adheres to clinical safety standards. In addition to external beam radiation therapy, the dosimetrist may also design and participate in treatment plans involving interstitial brachytherapy and the use of radioactive sources.
Upon completion of the treatment plan, the medical dosimetrist partners with radiation therapists to implement the prescribed plan and verify accurate treatment delivery.
The Alliance for Cancer Care is looking for a full-time Certified Medical Dosimetrist to join our dedicated team of cancer care professionals. Working closely with radiation oncologists and medical physicists, you'll help design and implement treatment plans that reflect our mission-to provide exceptional, patient-centered cancer care with precision and compassion.
Major Job Duties and Functions:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to satisfactorily perform each of the essential duties/responsibilities listed below. Reasonable accommodation may be provided to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential duties/responsibilities of this job.
- Design a treatment plan by means of computer and/or manual computation with optimal beam geometry (dose-volume constraints, dose calculations) to deliver a prescribed radiation dose and spare critical structures in accordance with the radiation oncologist's prescription.
- Identify and contour normal and dose-limiting structures by utilizing images from one or more data sets (fusion and registration, contouring/segmentation). Assuming proficiency in image registration with various image data sets to include CT, MRI and PET.
- Create and transfer reference images and localization markers for portal verification and treatment delivery to include DRRs, CBCTs and other IGRT methods, as specified (review of final treatment plan).
- Supervise, perform or assist in simulations and tumor localization using specified imaging modalities including, but not limited to CT, MRI and PET.
- Supervise, perform or assist in the planning and implementation of the fabrication of compensation filters, custom shields, wedges and other beam modifying devices.
- Supervise, perform or assist in the planning and implementation of the production of molds, casts and other immobilization devices.
- Communicate with the radiation therapist(s) and assume an advisory role in the implementation of the treatment plan, including the correct use of immobilization devices, compensators, wedges, field arrangement and other treatment or imaging parameters.
- Perform calculations for the accurate delivery of the prescribed dose, document all pertinent information in the patient record and verify the mathematical accuracy of all calculations by an approved method; monitor accuracy of delivery (ports, dose, etc.).
- Provide assistance and technical support to the medical physicist in radiation safety and protection, qualitative machine calibrations, quality assurance of treatment plans and radiation oncology equipment (equipment, software and systems acceptance testing, maintenance and commissioning).
- Operate and perform quality assurance, under the direction of the medical physicist, on the treatment planning computer(s) (equipment, software and systems acceptance testing, maintenance and commissioning).
- Supervise, perform or assist in the application of specific methods of patient and/or beam dosimetry as directed by the medical physicist; special procedures (SRS, SBRT, HDR, etc.).
- Assist in brachytherapy procedures by performing treatment planning and dose calculations. May perform or assist in the receiving, loading and shipping of radioactive materials.
- Utilize radiation monitoring devices to measure radioactivity and perform assays.
- Accurately codes for technical treatment planning and quality assurance tasks.
- Performs general computerized tasks, such as word processing, using spreadsheets, moving and altering files and directories and performing data backup.
- Teach applied aspects of medical dosimetry to students, radiation therapists and residents.
- Participate in clinical research.
- Participating in continuing education.
- Participate in quality improvement processes.
