About the Department
The Recreation Leader / Youth Basketball Facilitator is a part-time position with responsibility for a variety of tasks related to Parks and Recreation’s youth basketball program, Hot Shots. Work is performed under the general supervision of the Recreation Program Supervisor. Work is typically performed in a school or facility gymnasium. This position is responsible for ensuring a safe, fun, positive environment, including and not limited to; game facilitation, refereeing, timekeeping, moderate to heavy physical labor with facility set-up/take-down, and providing excellent customer service to participants, parents, and spectators. Position will require work on a flexible schedule, primarily on Saturdays. Additional work opportunities may be available on Thursdays, Fridays, and Sundays.
Position Duties
- Facilitate youth basketball games, practices, and activities in accordance with program rules and city policies.
- Serve as a referee or game official, maintaining fairness, safety, and sportsmanship.
- Operate scoreboards, keep accurate game scores and time, and manage game schedules.
- Set up and take down equipment, including basketball backboards, score tables, chairs, and signage.
- Supervise participants to ensure safety and positive conduct on and off the court.
- Provide guidance and support to volunteer coaches and youth participants.
- Greet the public, answer program-related questions, and maintain good public relations.
- Enforce facility and program rules; respond appropriately to emergencies or conflicts.
- Assist with program evaluation, inventory, and basic recordkeeping as assigned.
- Available to work evenings and weekends.
- Perform related duties as assigned by recreation staff.
Minimum Qualifications
- Use good written and verbal skills, using good English and diction.
- Safe work practices.
- Basic basketball rules, gameplay, and sportsmanship principles.
- Recreation or youth sports program operations.
- Safety practices and emergency response procedures.
- Customer relations and service skills.
- Communicate effectively with youth, parents, staff, and the public.
- Officiate games, make fair, consistent judgments.
- Work independently and as part of a team.
- Maintain a positive and professional attitude.
- Lift and move equipment (up to 40 lbs) and perform light physical tasks.
- Perform light to moderate physical tasks.
Other Qualifications
- Any combination of training and experience that would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities are qualifying. A typical way to obtain the requisite knowledge and abilities would be one (1) year of previous experience with recreational activities, childcare, or related field, preferred.
- First Aid and CPR Certification are desirable
