Job Description: Chief Technical Officer

About Us

Contech’ is an early-stage startup on a mission to empower the backbone of the construction industry: small to mid-sized contractors. While most tech companies build solutions for large enterprises, we are building an affordable and intuitive solution. We are designed for the majority of contractors who can't afford or are not served by complex, enterprise-grade software.

Our solution helps these companies collaborate and manage their core operations—from RFIs, submittals, and drawings to project finances. We aim to be the "Procore for the rest of us": just as powerful for our target user, but far more accessible and intuitive for teams on the jobsite. We have a clear product vision, a defined MVP, and are now looking for a foundational technical leader to join us as CTO.

The Role: What You'll Do

This isn't a typical 9-to-5. As our first technical hire and a key member of the founding team, you will be the architect of our entire technology platform and strategy. You will take our product idea and MVP concept and turn them into a scalable, secure, and production-ready application.

In the beginning, you will be hands-on, writing code and building the core product. As we grow, you will recruit, lead, and mentor our founding engineering team, shaping a culture of innovation, speed, and quality. This is a strategic, hands-on role for someone who wants to build a company, not just a product.

Key Responsibilities

  • Technical Strategy & Architecture: Define and own the complete technical roadmap, from tech stack and architecture to data strategy and security.
  • Hands-On Development: Lead the initial development of our MVP, writing clean, scalable, and well-documented code. You will be our "Engineer #1."
  • Product Leadership: Partner closely with the CEO to translate the product vision and user feedback into a tangible, high-quality product.
  • Team Building & Management: Recruit, hire, mentor, and manage a world-class engineering team from the ground up.
  • Execution & Scalability: Establish development best practices (CI/CD, testing, agile) and ensure our systems are built to scale as our user base grows.
  • Technical Evangelism: Clearly communicate technical decisions and strategy to co-founders, investors, and future team members.
  • Budget & Vendor Management: Make critical "build vs. buy" decisions, manage technical budgets, and oversee relationships with third-party vendors and APIs.

Who You Are: Qualifications

Required:

  • Proven Technical Leadership: Significant experience (e.g., 7+ years) in software engineering, with a clear progression to a senior leadership role (e.g., Principal Engineer, Engineering Manager, VP of Engineering, or previous CTO).
  • Startup DNA: You must have experience in an early-stage startup environment. You are a scrappy, resourceful problem-solver who thrives in ambiguity and is comfortable with rapid change.
  • Full-Stack & Hands-On: You are still a builder at heart. You have expert-level, hands-on experience across the full stack (e.g., React/Vue, Node/Python/Go, AWS/GCP/Azure, SQL/NoSQL).
  • Product-Minded: You have experience taking a product from initial concept (MVP) to a production-ready application used by real customers.
  • Excellent Communicator: You can clearly articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, investors, and team members.
  • Team Builder: You have experience hiring and managing other engineers and are passionate about mentoring.

Preferred:

  • Industry Experience: A background in or passion for the construction, AEC (Architecture, Engineering, Construction), or proptech industries.
  • Specific Tech: Experience with development for both mobile (e.g., React Native/Flutter) and desktop web (e.g., React/Vue) applications, building collaborative SaaS platforms, and document/financial management systems.
  • Fundraising Experience: You have been part of a team that has successfully pitched to and raised capital from VCs.

What We Offer

  • True Impact: The opportunity to build a company and a product from scratch and redefine a major industry.
  • Autonomy: The freedom to build your vision for the technology and the team.
  • Competitive Compensation: A salary and benefits package appropriate for an early-stage, venture-backed startup.
  • H-1 Sponsorship if needed
