About the Department

Big Bend Community College (BBCC), a rural college serving vibrant, culturally rich communities in the Columbia Basin of Central Washington invites applications for an eTutor in the college's Bonaudi Library Department.

The eTutor position fulfills the requirement for BBCC to be part of the eTutoringOnline.org consortium which allows us to provide free online tutoring services in multiple subject areas to our students. This position is for a tutor in the Online Writing Lab. The duties and responsibilities include advising students how they can improve their written assignments. The tutor will use an online format to receive student assignments and return suggestions for improvement.

This position offers the flexibility to work remotely; however the candidates must reside in the state of Washington.

Position Duties

  • Complete required eTutor training.
  • Critiquing written assignments submitted by students to the online eTutoring service.  These assignments include written work in all subject areas.
  • Communication with the Director of eTutoringOnline and their supervisor at BBCC to schedule time for tutoring and keeping up with information and training provided by the consortium.
 

OTHER WORK ACTIVITIES:

  • Ensure compliance with college policies and procedures and state and federal regulations.  

  • Conduct self in a professional manner and ensures the interaction with team members and other support groups is conducted in a courteous and efficient manner conducive to the college’s values.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as may be required.  

Minimum Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • BA or higher in English or closely related field from a regionally-accredited institution.
  • Teaching and or tutoring experience.
  • Access to a reliable Internet connection.
  • Excellent computer skills, especially with word processing  and web based applications.
  • Ability to critique written work competently, giving helpful suggestions to the student.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE EXPERIENCE AND KNOWLEDGE IN: 

  • Teaching writing, preferably at the college level.

  • Knowledge of standard documentation styles.

  • Online communication with students.

DUTIES OF THE POSITION REQUIRE THE ABILITY TO:

  • A willingness to follow the protocols and practices of the eTutoringOnline consortium, including constructing responses according to its rubric.
  • Regular and consistent attendance. 
  • A willingness or desire to work on weekends.
  • Ability to accurately report hours worked. 
  • The ability to communicate effectively in writing, and preferably, verbally.
  • Experience with a range of assignments, styles, and stages of the writing process.
  • Empathy and understanding of the difficulties faced by a diverse group of learners.
  • The ability to craft tactful, constructive responses to students regardless of the student’s skill or education level.
  • Knowledge of and sensitivity to cultural and/or language norms that may be playing a part in the writer’s work, especially with regard to multilingual writers.
  • The ability to guide a student through a tough spot using open-ended questions and without simply solving the problem for the student.
  • Comfort and familiarity with the rules and grammar governing the English language.
  • A desire to improve personal tutoring skills by taking advantage of additional training sessions and constructive feedback.
