The Role
Join our team at Newcastle University, the UK’s leading centre for clinical trials in autoimmune thyroid disease.
The position is for an ambitious clinician who aims to consolidate their clinical training with a one year period of substantive research experience. You will be responsible for day to day clinical activities for a clinical trial investigating immunotherapeutic treatment for Hashimoto’s thyroiditis which has been funded by MRC (UKRI). Training to perform necessary laboratory research techniques of relevance to the study will be given. The post will be based at the Clinical Research Facility and Endocrine Unit at the Royal Victoria Infirmary, and Newcastle University Translational and Clinical Research Institute (Centre for Life site). The post would suit someone seeking a career in Endocrinology, Rheumatology, Immunology or Haematology.
You will be expected to become an integral part of the multidisciplinary endocrine team and attend specialist NHS endocrinology clinics. You will provide an interface between clinical and laboratory studies and local and regional clinicians to aid the conduct of high-quality and safe clinical trials. You will recruit, treat and assess patient responses, and analyse and interpret the trial data with statistical support.
This is a fixed-term post for one year, to cover maternity leave.
You will work between the Newcastle NIHR Clinical Research Facility on the RVI site and Newcastle University’s laboratories at the International Centre for Life.
No out of hours working is expected.

Key Accountabilities
- Recruiting and screening research participants for the clinical trial
- Treating trial subjects in accordance with trial protocol
- Performing follow up visits and making laboratory measurements of outcome data in accordance with trial protocol
- Contributing to trial governance and ethics procedures, and ensuring trial data integrity
- Reporting and managing and adverse events during the trial
- Working with CRF and lab teams to ensure Trial measurements are performed
The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
- You will be a doctor in training with experience of internal hospital medicine appropriate to your stage of training
- Ability to work effectively with team members including nurses, radiography, pharmacy, and medical colleagues
- Experience of recording clinical data using both paper and electronic health records
- Competent in simple clinical procedures such as taking blood samples and inserting IV cannulas
Desirable
- Evidence of a research experience or publications in the relevant field
- Experience in clinical trials or flow cytometry studies
- Previous experience of endocrinology/diabetes

Qualifications
- Medical degree: MBBS or equivalent
- Clinical training in adult general internal medicine
- GMC registration with licence to practice
- Up to date GCP for trials certificate
- Up to date adult BLS training
Desirable
• MRCP(UK), MRCPI or equivalent
• Higher professional training in clinical endocrinology, rheumatology, immunology or haematology
