The Police Department is establishing an eligibility list for the position of Police Sergeant. Applicants must be currently employed with the Visalia Police Department. The list will be used to fill future vacancies throughout calendar year 2026 unless there are not enough names for consideration. Applicants must meet eligibility requirements and provide appropriate supporting documents.
Position Duties
POLICE SERGEANT
Supervises assigned shifts in the Operations Division, specialty units in the Operations Support Division, or administrative units in the Administration Division; responds to major law enforcement incidents and participates in major investigations; participates in training of police personnel and other management projects and activities. Performs related responsibilities as required and provides a positive leadership role in the organization.
Minimum Qualifications
Police Sergeant Minimum Requirements:
- Hold the position of Police Agent or
- Four (4) years of sworn municipal law enforcement experience, of which the last two (2) years have been with the Visalia Police Department as a full-time sworn Police Officer.
- Graduation from an accredited college or university with an associate's degree in criminal justice, police science or related field. Proof of a minimum of 60 completed college units and current enrollment in an accredited college or university BA program will be accepted in lieu of an AA degree. A bachelor's degree is desirable.
- Possession of POST Intermediate Certificate.
- Must successfully complete the POST Supervisory Course within one (1) year of appointment.

PHYSICAL STANDARDS
Must maintain P.O.S.T. physical standards, including mobility and physical strength and stamina to respond to emergency situations and apprehend suspects, lift and push or pull individuals or objects weighing up to 25 pounds and perform the essential functions of the job; ability to work in a standard office setting and to operate a motor vehicle.
