DEPARTMENT:  Energy Services, City of Rocky Mount
 
JOB SUMMARY:  This position performs skilled technical work assisting with the installation, testing, and repair of load management switches; assists with generator and SCADA system operations.

Position Duties

  • Assists in the installation, testing, and repair of load management switches in customer homes.
  • Assists with operating all generators as required for load management and in exercising all generators weekly ensuring proper operation. 
  • Assists with electrical construction projects including the installation of various electrical wiring devices and installation, maintenance, and repair of the City’s generators and associated equipment.
  • Assists with SCADA system operation for load management. 
  • Assists with the cleanup of PCB spills; assists with the testing of equipment for PCB levels; labels, stores, inspects and ships PCBs according to state and federal regulations.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Knowledge and level of competency commonly associated with completion of specialized training in the field of work, in addition to basic skills typically associated with a high school education.
  • Sufficient experience to understand the basic principles relevant to the major duties of the position, usually associated with the completion of an apprenticeship/internship or having had a similar position for one to two years.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain a valid driver's license issued by the State of North Carolina for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.

Other Qualifications

  • Knowledge of the National Electric Code.
  • Knowledge of electrical wiring, HVAC control circuits, or other electrical equipment. 
  • Knowledge of hand tools, test instruments, and small power tools.
  • Knowledge of proper safety procedures, rules and regulations including NESC, OSHA, and City policies.
  • Skill in analyzing problems and identifying solutions.
  • Skill in preparing clear and accurate reports.
  • Skill in establishing cooperative and productive working relationships.
  • Skill in setting priorities for competing projects.
  • Skill in performing mathematical calculations.
  • Skill in operating computers and other standard office equipment. 
  • Skill in interpersonal relations.
  • Skill in oral and written communication. 

SUPERVISORY CONTROLS:
 The Load Management Supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures and the nature and propriety of the final results.
 
GUIDELINES:  Guidelines include the National Electric Code; the City of Rocky Mount Personnel Manual; federal and state PCB rules and regulations; and OSHA regulations. These guidelines are generally clear and specific, but may require some interpretation in application.  
 
COMPLEXITY:  The work consists of related technical duties. Working in extreme temperatures and in confined spaces contributes to the complexity of the position.
 
SCOPE AND EFFECT:  The purpose of this position is to assist in the operation of the Load Management Program. Success in this position contributes to the provision of utilities for system customers.
 
PERSONAL CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically with co-workers, other City personnel, vendors, and customers.
 
PURPOSE OF CONTACTS:  Contacts are typically to give or exchange information, resolve problems, and provide services.
 
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:  The work is typically performed while sitting at a desk or table or while intermittently sitting, standing, bending, crouching, or stooping. The employee frequently lifts light and occasionally heavy objects, climbs ladders, and uses tools or equipment requiring a high degree of dexterity.
 
WORK ENVIRONMENT:  The work is typically performed in an office or outdoors, occasionally in cold or inclement weather. The employee is exposed to noise, dust, dirt, grease, machinery with moving parts, and irritating chemicals. The work requires the use of protective devices such as masks, goggles, or gloves.
