About the Department

The Academic English as a Second Language Department (AESL) at Holyoke Community College seeks a full-time tenure-track faculty member to further its tradition of teaching English language learners to understand, speak, read, and write English with sufficient fluency to proceed successfully with their chosen field of study at HCC and beyond.  As the most active AESL program in Western Massachusetts, we seek candidates who will reinforce the quality of education that we already provide, help increase enrollment and retention, shorten students’ trajectory to graduation, and prepare our students for the future they deserve.

As part of the college’s efforts to ensure equitable outcomes for all HCC students, candidates must bring a demonstrated commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in their teaching practice, as well as a record of excellence in college-level instruction.  Because HCC is an Hispanic-serving institution, we are particularly interested in candidates who are native speakers of Spanish, who can provide a role model with whom Hispanic students may share linguistic and cultural experiences.

Primary responsibilities include: teaching intermediate and advanced lecture courses that integrate reading/speaking/listening skills and writing/grammar skills; strengthening the ongoing development of the AESL Department via assessment and curriculum development; and participating in college governance, recruitment and retention efforts, and professional development.

In addition to teaching experience, candidates should also demonstrate a commitment to student-centered advising, and building partnerships that will enhance students’ opportunities for career and transfer. Such partnerships include internal collaborations with advisors in ESL Support Services, with colleagues in other academic departments, and with HCC’s non-credit “English for Speakers of Other Languages” program.

Although hybrid teaching options may be available, this position will require a substantial amount of in-person, on-campus work.

Position Duties

  1. Teaching 2-3 sections each semester of intermediate and advanced lecture courses that integrate reading/speaking/listening skills and writing/grammar skills.
  2. Working closely with colleagues to develop innovative, student-centered, and culturally responsive teaching methods.
  3. Strengthening the ongoing development of the AESL Department via assessment and curriculum development.
  4. Working with colleagues in ESL Support Services to facilitate ESL students’ transition to coursework in their chosen academic major.
  5. Working with colleagues in ESL Support Services and the English Department to facilitate ESL students’ placement into the English Composition sequence.
  6. Advising up to 19 students per semester, including ESL students.
  7. Meeting with and assisting students during regular office hours.
  8. Actively participating in Department, Division, and professional staff meetings as well as other components of college governance and other committees, task forces, and sub-committees.
  9. Maintaining professional expertise in areas of specialization and remaining current with developments in the field.
  10. Participating in college programs and activities, including new student orientation and student field trips.
  11. Providing college service as required by the MCCC contract, including participation in shared governance committees, sub-committees, or task forces.
