How you’ll impact our mission:
The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is hiring a Veterinary Assistant Intern for a winter internship at our Racine Campus! This is an unpaid, seasonal internship scheduled up to 30 hours per week. This internship is ideal for those interested in veterinary or shelter medicine fields and provides the opportunity to assist our veterinary staff with a variety of duties and gain valuable experience. Interns are responsible for their own transportation and living arrangements. Key accountabilities:
- Preparing and/or administering animal treatments
- Assisting with surgery preparation and surgical recovery
- Assisting with the movement of patients, recovery of patients, and general flow
- Cleaning of veterinary clinic and exam rooms
- Assisting with foster animal exams and rechecks
Qualifications:
- Able to successfully meet the physical demands of the job, which include stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, standing, walking, pulling, lifting, grasping, and repetitive motions. Must be able to routinely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
- Highly motivated, enthusiastic self-starter with a professional attitude
- Demonstrated alignment with our mission, people-centered philosophy, and organizational values of compassion, respect, and kindness; innovation; professionalism; equity; and positive approach
- Ability to navigate emotional aspects of animal welfare work

The Wisconsin Humane Society (WHS) is the oldest and largest shelter in Wisconsin. It was founded in 1879 and operates shelters in Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Door, Brown, and Kenosha Counties, as well as a Spay/Neuter Clinic in West Allis. The organization offers adoption services, youth programs, low-cost veterinary resources, retail stores, volunteer programs, dog training classes, and much more. The Milwaukee shelter also houses the state’s busiest Wildlife Rehabilitation Center. WHS is an independent nonprofit and receives no general government funding and is not part of any national umbrella group.
