About this Role

As a Personal Trainer at the YMCA of Southern Maine, you'll do more than just count reps – you'll build connections, celebrate victories, and help create a welcoming community where everyone feels supported in reaching their wellness goals. This part-time position is perfect for someone passionate about fitness who wants to make a meaningful impact in people's lives.
You'll work with members of all fitness levels and backgrounds, creating personalized experiences that meet each person exactly where they are on their wellness journey.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Inclusion - Honor the YMCA of Southern Maine’s Promise Statement. Models a commitment to equity and inclusion. Intentionally connect members and program participants to one another, fostering a supportive fitness community. Create a safe environment where all individuals feel welcomed and respected, regardless of their fitness level or background.
- Personalized Fitness Instruction - Properly instruct clients on strength training equipment, free weights, flexibility exercises, and cardiovascular machines. Provide effective individual supervision and encouragement during member sessions, adapting instruction based on each person's readiness to change and unique health needs.
- Education & Empowerment - Educate clients on current fitness principles, practices, and research findings. Share healthy lifestyle information in one-on-one situations, helping members build confidence to achieve their health and well-being goals.
- Program Development - Review clients' programs regularly to help them reach their fitness goals. Identify and celebrate member successes, creating new approaches to serve the diverse Healthy Living needs of our community.
- Safety & Operations - Ensure all equipment is clean, in working order, and maintenance records are properly maintained. Report any incidents, accidents, problems, or equipment concerns in a timely manner to appropriate personnel.
- Professional & Personal Growth - Maintains a high degree of emotional maturity and interpersonal skills and is committed to personal growth and skill acquisition. Is an active participant in all meetings and trainings, as required. Maintain current certifications and participate in continuing education opportunities.
- Mission- Be an advocate for the Y by promoting our cause and mission. Follow all Y Brand guidelines and receive prior approval for any Y-related social media use.
- Reliability & Professionalism - Meet association standards for attendance, punctuality, and dependability. Be reliable with scheduled member appointments. Wear neat and appropriate YMCA clothing while completing work duties.
We're looking for someone with:
- Current Personal Trainer Certification (from accepted certification bodies) and/or a 4-Year Degree in Exercise Science
- Current CPR/AED/Basic First Aid Certification
- Previous experience and training in instructing participants one-on-one and/or in small groups
- Working knowledge of proper exercise equipment use, good body mechanics, and healthy exercise practices
- Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing, presenting information clearly in various settings
- Strong problem-solving skills and ability to design and implement work processes
- Ability to handle multiple tasks and demands with a high tolerance for interruptions and varied routines
- Proven desire to take ownership of responsibilities and work successfully with diverse populations
- Ability to maintain confidentiality related to member and personnel matters
Additionally, the right candidate must:
- Be able to complete all physical requirements of the job with or without reasonable accommodation
- Possess a valid driver's license and ability to travel locally
- Complete a criminal background check prior to hire
- Complete required Y-USA training modules (within 90 days of hire)
Salary Range
$20 - $30/hour, based on experience and certifications, following YMCA compensation guidelines.
