Part-time Medical Laboratory Technician in our Hospital Laboratory.  

Typical schedule is 2-3 days/week, M-F, 8 hours/shift between 6AM - 730PM with occasional nights and weekends based on business needs.

This contributes to the proper diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the patient.  An Associate degree in Medical Laboratory Technician/completion of a Medical Laboratory Technician Program required. 


Job Title:  Medical Laboratory Technician/Testing Personnel

Primary Function and Relationship to Total Organization

Daily performance of all phases of Laboratory operation to provide precise, accurate laboratory results in a timely manner to the provider. This contributes to the proper diagnosis, treatment and monitoring of the patient.

Reports to:  The Laboratory Director/Manager and or Laboratory General Supervisor

Supervises:  New employees and students

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Collects blood and other specimens skillfully, efficiently, aseptically, and safely. 
  2. Start-up, cleaning, maintenance and troubleshooting of all laboratory equipment.
  3. Properly labels and processes specimens for testing.
  4. Performs routine testing in all areas of the laboratory, observing necessary quality control standards.
  5. Checks reagents for outdates and informing personnel responsible for ordering when supplies are low.
  6. Keeps detailed records of tests performed and maintains records.
  7. Properly prepares specimens to be shipped to reference laboratories for testing.
  8. Participates in housekeeping duties such as cleaning and equipment maintenance. 
  9. Obtains specimens when requested from outside of the hospital.
  10. Performs DOT/Non-DOT urine drug screen collections and Breath Alcohol Testing.
  11. May assist in training new personnel and students.
  12. Communicates effectively with other members of the health care team and patients.
  13. Maintains confidentiality of patient information in accordance with HIPAA regulations.
  14. Able to work any shifts, including weekends as needed. Able to work independently.
  15. Takes call when scheduled and be able to arrive at the hospital within 20 minutes.
  16. Understands and follows all policies and procedures pertaining to the Laboratory and hospital.
  17. Responsible for participating in Continuing Education.
  18. Capable of identifying problems that may adversely affect test performance or results. Must be able to correct the problem or know when to notify the Laboratory Director/Manager or designee.
  19. Proficient in the use of the hospital and laboratory computer systems.
  20. Maintains a cooperative, teamwork relationship with coworkers.
  21. Observes and demonstrate all aspects of Service Excellence and Key Service Behaviors.
  22. Assumes all responsibilities of Testing Personnel listed in CLIA §493.1495.
  23. Performs functions other than described above as deemed necessary by the Laboratory Director/ Manager.

Minimum educational requirements

  1. Meets the requirements for Testing Personnel in CLIA 493.1489. The following credentials satisfy the requirements in conjunction with the skills and knowledge requirements. These credentials do not include all possible means of meeting the requirements. 
    • An associate degree in medical laboratory technology. 
  2. Certification by a national organization (i.e. ASCP, AMT, NCA) preferred.
  3. Certification for DOT urine drug testing collection and Breath Alcohol Testing. Note: May become certified after employment.
  4. Valid driver’s license. 

 

Work environment

  1. Employees in this job classification have been identified as having the likelihood of occupational exposure to blood or other potentially infectious materials. The employee must comply with the OSHA Exposure Control Plan, utilizing Universal Precautions.
  2. The employee is subject to exposure to sharps, such as needles and lancets.
  3. The employee may be exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals. The employee must comply with the laboratories Chemical Hygiene Plan.
  4. The employee is subject to normal, climate-controlled environment (modern clinical laboratory).
  5. The employee is subject to outside environmental conditions, traveling to nursing homes, etc. to draw blood
