The Instrumentation and Controls Discipline Manager, reporting to the Engineering Director, will lead and develop direct reporting personnel, assure consistent application of client, industry and Nexus standards and collaborate with other Nexus technical and project leaders to improve process efficiency while consistently meeting project budget and delivery commitments. 

The Instrumentation and Controls Discipline Manager should be comfortable interfacing with clients, visiting clients’ facilities and performing physical work such as walking, stooping, kneeling and climbing stairs/ladders. Additionally, the Instrumentation and Controls Discipline Manager must demonstrate keen interpersonal, leadership, organizational and technical skills and have a thorough understanding of project management and controls practices.

Additionally, the Instrumentation and Controls Discipline Manager must demonstrate keen interpersonal, leadership, organizational and technical skills and have a thorough understanding of project management and controls practices. 

The anticipated annual starting base salary for this position will fall within the range listed above and is based on experience, qualifications, and internal equity. Key Accountabilities:
  • Creating a culture of collaboration, safety appreciation and camaraderie within the instrumentation and controls department. 
  • Establishing goals, plans and taking action to develop each direct report’s technical and soft skills. 
  • Assurance that discipline deliverables meet code, client and Nexus technical requirements. 
  • Assignment of personnel to projects based on both project and skill requirements. 
  • Establishing and meeting budgeted hours and timing for project instrumentation and controls discipline deliverables. 
  • Collaborating with other Nexus leaders to improve department and project delivery efficiency. 


  • Responsibilities:
  • Consistently follow Nexus policies and practices applicable to the instrumentation and controls department. 
  • Understand and teach key elements of process safety and its impact on instrumentation and controls design. 
  • Planning and organizing department activities. 
  • Lead and/or actively participate in departmental and project technical design and quality reviews. 
  • Write performance reviews, development plans and resolve performance challenges. 
  • Onboard, train, and establish mentoring plan for new staff. 
  • Confer with higher levels of management. 


  • Competencies/Qualifications:
  • Experience in refinery or a continuous process chemical plant.
  • P&ID understanding and expert knowledge of process field instrumentation. 
  • Working knowledge and appreciation of process safety management and inherently safer design concepts. 
  • Project lead experience developing engineering schedules, budgets and forecasts. 
  • Experience with application and design of Safety Instrumented Systems. 
  • Excellent interpersonal, collaboration, verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Experience building and developing high functioning teams. 
  • Field engineering experience relative to instrumentation installation and troubleshooting. 
  • Deep understanding of instrumentation and controls design, specifications and engineering practices. 
  • Understanding of Project Management and Project Controls concepts. 
  • Experience managing discipline/project team work according to defined project budgets and schedules. 
  • Understanding and appreciation of design, engineering and analysis tools including AutoCAD, SPI, instrument sizing and selection software.  
  • Keen understanding of industry Standards from API, ISA, NEC, NFPA, etc. 
  • Working knowledge of risk management practices 


  • Educational/Certification Requirements:
  • Bachelor of Science in Engineering, required
  • Minimum of 10 years instrumentation and controls design
  • PE License a plus
  • Advanced degree a plus
  • SIS certification a plus
  • Active participation in professional organizations a plus
