This position entails responsibility for a range of permitting-related and office functions to support the activities of the building division. Key responsibilities include processing building permits, answering inspection-related questions, assisting with contractor licensing, and managing documentation records. The individual in this role will take an active leadership position in addressing customer inquiries and concerns. This is a clerical position that operates under the general supervision of the Deputy Building Official.

Position Duties

  • Receive, process, and issue a variety of permits, ensuring the collection of associated fees.
  • Deliver exemplary customer service when interacting with a high number of customers, both via telephone and in person.
  • Provide assistance to contractors, owner-builders, and the public with inquiries or issues related to permitting.
  • Respond to phone calls and emails concerning permitting and inspections related questions.
  • Effectively operate a variety of office equipment.

Minimum Qualifications

Education/Experience:


An associate's degree, supplemented by two years of building department or construction industry-related customer service experience or an equivalent blend of formal education and professional experience, or a minimum of four (4) years of experience in a role such as a building support specialist, permit technician or in a related field involving building, permitting, or construction office work.

Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:


  • ICC Permit Technician Certification must be obtained within the first year of employment.

Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:


Knowledge of permitting and licensing procedures, regulations, and requirements.  

Knowledge of general construction terms.  Knowledge of various software programs.  

Ability to use various office equipment, including personal computers, scanning equipment and related systems.   

Ability to maintain document records.   

Ability to explain licensing and permitting procedures as well as other pertinent information to contractors in a concise manner.  

Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.  

Ability to interact with the public and staff effectively.   

Ability to manage a large volume of phone calls effectively. 

Must possess typing/keyboard skills, with the ability to perform data entry and operate various computer software programs.  

Must possess excellent customer service skills.

ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS:


In an office environment, this position requires managing a high volume of phone calls, emails, and in-person interactions with customers. You will collaborate with internal departments and complete daily tasks. You will frequently encounter customers with a range of questions and concerns, including those who may be dissatisfied. Your main goal is to provide excellent customer service, even in challenging situations.
