Job Description Summary:

The Assistant Professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology is a 12-month, tenure-track faculty position with responsibilities in research, teaching, and service. The position is expected to establish and maintain an independent research program, contribute to instruction in the medical and graduate curricula, and participate in departmental and institutional service activities.

The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology provides access to institutional research resources and opportunities for collaboration with faculty in affiliated centers and institutes, including the KU Cancer Center, Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, Diabetes Institute, Kidney Institute, Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research, and the Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition. Core facilities are available to support metabolic, mitochondrial, proteomic, genomic, structural, and imaging studies.

This position includes participation in medical and graduate education programs, including the PhD program in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology.

Appointments at the Assistant Professor level include a seven-year probationary period. Promotion and tenure decisions are based on performance in research, teaching, and service, as well as demonstrated potential for continued professional growth and contributions to the institution.

Job Description:

Job Duties:

Research

  • Develop and maintain an externally funded research program in the area of metabolism research, broadly defined.

Collaboration

  • Partner with KUMC colleagues in the basic sciences and with faculty in the University of Kansas NCI-designated Comprehensive Cancer Center, the KUMC Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center, KU Diabetes Institute, Kansas Center for Metabolism and Obesity Research and the Center for Children’s Healthy Lifestyles & Nutrition.
  • Collaborate with other faculty members as part of interdisciplinary research teams.

Instruction

  • Contribute to the educational enrichment of medical and/or graduate students in topics related to metabolism and biochemistry.
  • Participate in graduate student education for the programs of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology department and the KUMC Interdisciplinary Graduate Program in the Biomedical Sciences.
  • Prepare and present lectures, and facilitate in small group teaching, with opportunity for teaching faculty, residents, and students in the partnering clinical departments.

Service

  • Provide other services to the school, university, and community, as appropriate.
  • Collaborate with external investigators in area of expertise.
  • Participate in journal peer review, study section service, and organization of national and international scientific events.

Other Duties As Assigned

  • Serve on committees at KUMC and in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, serve on academic or service committees and contribute to other projects assigned by the Chair.
  • Participate in departmental committees, activities, and faculty meetings.

Required Qualifications

Education: PhD, MD/PhD or equivalent in biological sciences.

This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have the foundational knowledge and skill set required to perform the duties of the position.  The level of degree is based on accreditation requirements, institutional standards of academic and professional excellence, alignment with peer institution benchmarks, and contributes to the credibility and effectiveness of the role within the university community.

Work Experience:

  • Experience developing an externally funded research program.
  • Research experience in molecular mechanisms relevant to metabolism and/or metabolic disease.
  • Experience with peer-reviewed publications in related areas. 
  • Experience in biochemical research.
  • Experience teaching.

Preferred Qualifications

Education:  Post-doctoral experience in academic or private health-related research environment.

  • Record of expertise in molecular or cellular approaches to study, for example, (allosteric) regulation of metabolic pathways and enzymes, lipid biology, mitochondrial redox biology, signal transduction, post-translational modifications, autophagy, or transcriptional regulation as demonstrated by application materials.

Work Experience:  Experience mentoring and supervising graduate students.
