Maui Bus Lead Mechanic Technician

Reports to: Maintenance Supervisor
Status: Non-Exempt
Pay Rate: $37.13
 

1. Job Purpose/Objective:

The Lead Mechanic Technician – Maui Bus plays a critical role in ensuring the safety, reliability, and efficiency of Roberts Hawaii’s Maui Bus fleet. This position is responsible for performing and overseeing vehicle maintenance and repair work on all company buses, vans, and support vehicles assigned to the Maui Bus Division. The Lead Mechanic Technician supports the Maintenance Supervisor by providing technical expertise, coordinating workflow, and mentoring other mechanics to maintain high maintenance standards that ensure safe, on-time service delivery to the public.

2. Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform advanced diagnostics and corrective action on major and minor vehicle issues, including electrical, mechanical, and hydraulic systems.
  • Train, coach, and supervise underclass technicians (e.g., Mechanic Tech II, Mechanic Helper) in all aspects of vehicle maintenance and safety procedures.
  • Schedule and assign repair and preventive maintenance tasks to maximize fleet uptime and shop productivity.
  • Ensure all work meets DOT, manufacturer, and Roberts Hawaii maintenance standards.
  • Generate detailed work orders daily to document all completed maintenance and repairs in accordance with company and regulatory requirements.
  • Perform routine repairs, inspections, and preventive maintenance on diesel and gas-powered vehicles, including buses equipped with wheelchair lifts and air conditioning systems.
  • Maintain proper inventory levels of tools, parts, and supplies; coordinate parts orders as needed.
  • Promote and ensure a safe, clean, and organized shop environment in compliance with company safety policies and OSHA standards.
  • Collaborate with the Maui Bus Operations and Safety departments to support road calls, breakdowns, and special service needs.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested by the Maintenance Supervisor or Maintenance Manager.

3. Essential Skills (Minimum qualifications individual must possess when entering position) – i.e. skillsets, education, certifications, etc.:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Must have a minimum of five (5) years of work-related experience as a Mechanic II; and/or training (e.g. technical/trade school preferred); or equivalent combination of education and experience)
  • Able to calculate math functions such as addition, subtraction and division
  • Must be able to speak, read and write in English
  • Minimum five (5) ASE certificates (e.g. Brakes, Suspension & Steering, Engines, Power-train (drive-line), Air Conditioning, Transmission, Engine Diagnosis, etc.) or Hawaii State Mechanic License
  • Must have minimum Type 3 License with a current valid traffic abstract
  • Must own hand tools
  • Must be able to work flexible schedule including weekends, nights, and holidays
  • Operational knowledge of basic hand tools required
  • Operational knowledge of basic shop equipment (e.g. vise, press, floor jacks, etc.) required
  • Recognize problems and respond, systematically gather information, sort through complex issues, seek input from others, address root cause of issues, make timely decisions, can make difficult decisions, use consensus when possible, communicate decisions to others

4. Working Conditions/Job Environment:

    • Medium to heavy work: Exerting up to 70 pounds of force occasionally and/or up to 50 pounds of force, and/or up to 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects
    • Must be able to stand and walk for extended periods of time
    • Must have good manual dexterity which involves frequent bending, stooping, overhead reaching, kneeling, squatting and other physical demands
    • Must be able to work in a repair shop environment where loud noises, exhaust fumes and chemicals are commonly present 
    • Must convey detailed or important spoken instructions to other workers accurately, loudly, or quickly
    • Ability to receive detailed information through oral communication, and make fine discriminations in sound judgment
    • Must have visual acuity to perform an activity such as, but not limited to, operating machines such as lathes, drill presses, power saws and mills where the seeing job is at or within arm’s reach; performing mechanical or skilled trade’s tasks of a non-repetitive nature such as mechanics, etc.
    • Subject to hazards including a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical currents, working on scaffolding and high places, high heat and/or chemical exposure
    • Subject to atmospheric conditions: One or more of the following that affect the respiratory system or the skin such as fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases or poor ventilation
    • Subject to oils: There is air and/or skin exposure to oils and other cutting fluids
    • Some remote work may be necessary
