General Position Summary: The Lead Heavy-Duty Diesel Mechanic / Fleet Manager oversees the maintenance, repair, and efficient operation of a fleet of heavy-duty diesel equipment and vehicles. This position provides hands-on mechanical expertise, particularly with Caterpillar (CAT) engines and components—while supervising mechanics, coordinating preventive maintenance schedules, and ensuring compliance with safety and regulatory standards.
Essential Functions/Major Responsibilities:
Fleet Management
- Oversee the servicing, inspection, and repair of all fleet vehicles and heavy equipment.
- Maintain accurate maintenance records, service logs, and compliance documentation.
- Monitor fleet performance, fuel usage, and cost efficiency.
- Recommend fleet upgrades, replacements, and equipment purchases.
Technical & Mechanical Duties
- Diagnose, repair, and maintain CAT and other heavy-duty diesel engines, transmissions, and drivetrains.
- Perform advanced troubleshooting using CAT diagnostic tools and software.
- Conduct engine rebuilds, hydraulic system repairs, and electrical diagnostics.
- Ensure all work meets OEM standards and safety regulations.
- Respond to field service calls and emergency repairs when needed.
Safety & Compliance
- Enforce company safety policies and OSHA standards.
- Ensure compliance with DOT, EPA, and manufacturer regulations.
- Conduct safety inspections and participate in safety meetings.
Supervisory Responsibility:
- Lead and mentor a team of diesel mechanics and technicians.
- Assign, prioritize, and oversee repair and maintenance tasks.
- Develop and implement maintenance schedules to minimize downtime.
- Manage parts inventory, tools, and equipment.
- Coordinate with operations, dispatch, and management to align fleet availability with project needs.

- Advanced diagnostic and repair skills for heavy diesel equipment.

Qualifications and Education Requirements
- Education: High school diploma or GED required; technical or vocational training preferred.
- Certifications:
- CAT Heavy Equipment / Diesel Technician Certifications (required or highly preferred).
- ASE Diesel Certifications (preferred).
- CDL (Class A or B) preferred.
- Experience:
- 7+ years of hands-on experience as a heavy-duty diesel mechanic.
- 3+ years in a supervisory or fleet management role.
- Strong background in CAT equipment, hydraulics, and electrical systems.
