Since 1987, Independent Living Inc. (ILI) has been increasing access, encouraging self-determination, and advocating for the rights of people with disabilities in the Hudson Valley, of New York. Following the traditional independent living center (ILC) model, the majority of ILI’s board and staff are individuals with disabilities and community members’ lives are enriched by having services provided from a peer, life-experience perspective.

Independent Living, Inc. offers full-time employees excellent medical, dental and vision benefits, company matched 401(k), paid holidays, generous paid time off, and competitive wages.

Why Work with Us?

For Independent Living, Inc., this is more than a job. It’s an opportunity to turn your personal experience into a powerful force for change. You’ll work with a team that values your unique perspective, supports your growth and is built on respect for each person’s story. We’re committed to creating opportunities for both personal and professional growth. If you’re someone who wants to turn your lived experience into purpose and help others rediscover hope, you belong here. Together, we’ll make a difference, one connection at a time.

We strongly encourage individuals with disabilities and those from diverse backgrounds to apply.

Your Experience Matters

Are you someone who has walked your own path of recovery or healing, whether from mental health challenges, substance use, incarceration, or other life experiences and want to use what you’ve learned to support others? If so, this role may be a great fit for you.

As an INSET Recovery Specialist, you’ll be part of a compassionate team that meets people where they are; in their homes, in the community, or during times of crisis to help them reconnect with hope, stability, and support. You’ll use your own lived experience, empathy, and recovery journey to build trust and inspire others as they work toward their goals. You don’t need a specific degree or professional title to make a difference here—your life experience, listening skills, and belief in recovery are what matter most.

What You’ll Do

  • Offer person-to-person support for people who experience mental health or substance use challenges, helping them navigate tough moments and find a path forward.
  • Build meaningful connections by sharing your story (when appropriate) and showing that recovery is real and possible.
  • Help people access what they need from treatment and housing to employment, education, or social support networks.
  • Work alongside participants to create personalized wellness and recovery plans that reflect their goals, values, and choices.
  • Facilitate groups and community activities that foster connection, belonging, and empowerment.
  • Assist people transitioning from hospitals, emergency rooms, incarceration, or other settings into independent community living.
  • Stay connected and consistent, maintaining supportive contact with about 10–15 individuals, both one-on-one and in groups.
  • Collaborate with the team to ensure that care and support are well-coordinated and strengths-based.

Requirements

This Role Could Be a Great Fit If

  • You have a high school diploma or equivalent.
  • You have a valid unrestricted driver’s license.
  • You have personal, lived experience with recovery from mental health challenges, substance use, trauma, or involvement in the justice system and are comfortable sharing your journey to help others.
  • You believe in hope, choice, and self-determination as the foundation for recovery.
  • You have experience supporting others professionally, personally, or informally, in finding resources, setting goals, or getting through hard times.
  • You are open to learning trauma-informed and person-centered practices.
  • You are willing to complete requirements for the New York State Peer Specialist Certification.
  • You know or are eager to learn about local community supports in Orange and Sullivan Counties.
