We are seeking an experienced Neighborhood Protection Inspector to join our team! In this role, you will be responsible for ensuring the safety and wellbeing of our community by responding to alleged violations of city and state laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations related to environmental hazards and public health. The Neighborhood Protection Inspector conducts routine systematic surveys of the City for code violations. Responds to citizen complaints, enforces City ordinances and State laws. Maintains detailed case records, documentation, and files. Handles special projects as assigned. Generally, protects the health, welfare, and safety of persons within the City.  

Position Duties

  • Proactively surveys the City by vehicle and on foot. Investigates alleged violations of city and state laws, codes, ordinances, and regulations related to environmental hazards and public health nuisances. Documents evidence of code violations. 
  • Interacts with the public regarding City standards, municipal code compliance and enforcement. Conducts communication by correspondence, phone and/or in person regarding complaints, surveys, inspections, and provides solutions to obtain compliance.
  • Maintains all case records and related documents. Performs data entry on computer or other devices. Researches tax and other all other applicable records to determine land and vehicle ownership, issues proper notice when code violations are encountered and conducts follow up inspections. Generates abatement work orders and provides contractor direction and oversite. Generates citation and hearing requests, testifies at hearings and trials on behalf of the City, executes court orders.
  • Court preparation, documentation and attendance.
  • Performs all other related duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

Neighborhood Protection Inspector I ($17.46 - $21.83/hr DOQ)

Required:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days). 
  • Ability to obtain Texas Code Enforcement Officer certification in one year.
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve.
  • Ability to learn quickly and remain flexible in a fast-paced work environment
  • Customer service, writing, and oral communication skills.

Preferred:

  • Bilingual/Spanish.
  • Knowledge or experience in Code Enforcement
  • 30 college credit hours beyond High School level.
  • One year of related experience.
Neighborhood Protection Inspector II ($19.78 - $24.73/hr DOQ)
Required:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent (GED).
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record (must obtain TX driver’s license within 90 days).
  • Texas Code Enforcement Officer certification.
  • Ability to work independently and problem solve.
  • Ability to learn quickly and remain flexible in a fast-paced work environment
  • Customer service, writing, and oral communication skills.
Preferred:
  • Bilingual/Spanish.
  • 30 college credit hours beyond High School level.
  • Two years of experience in Code Enforcement.

Other Qualifications

Ability to deal with and communicate effectively (both orally and in writing) with co-workers, contractors, and the public. Ability to use various computer programs and databases.  Knowledge of City, State, and Federal Codes.
