Under administrative direction of Program Director, or other designated supervisor, recreational therapist is responsible for the planning, implementation, and execution of adaptive sports programs.

Program Operations/Direct Service:

  • Provides direct client services, support and instruction in organization-wide programs as needed.

  • Demonstrates knowledge of various types of adaptive sports equipment, instructional methods, and other recreational skills.

  • Ability to observe, evaluate and adjust equipment or instruction approach as appropriate.

  • Demonstrates leadership and takes initiative in group and event settings.

  • Follows organizational policies and procedures and implements safety and risk management protocols as related to specific program.

  • Effectively communicates with program participants to optimize participation, equipment selection, safety, and risk management as relevant to activity and their individual goals and abilities.

  • Assists in pre-event duties including ensuring equipment is available and in good working order for events, organizing and packing supplies and loading.

  • Assists in post-event duties including unloading, storage and maintenance of equipment, data entry, reporting and necessary follow up with participants.·

  • Assists in provision of appropriate training to program volunteers and student employees.

  • Collaborates with other organizations and community partners for provision of programs, outreach, and education opportunities.

  • Participates in organization-wide fundraising, outreach, marketing, and other initiatives.

  • Assists with customer service reservations and general inquiries via phone call or email.

  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Program Planning:

  • Collaborates and works cohesively with the Program Director and other team members on establishing and meeting program specific goals and objectives.

  • Maintains data systems and accurate daily records.

  • Assists the Program Director in program planning process including developing calendar of program offerings, volunteer recruitment, data entry, conducting site visits, establishing, and maintaining relationships with community partners and local venues.

  • Additional coordination responsibilities may be required for specific program components such as contracted services, veteran recreation, or equipment management.

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct services and excellent customer service to participants including instruction, support, implementing policies and procedures, pre and post event coordination and community collaborations.

  • Assist with planning and coordination of programs including developing opportunities, reporting and administrative projects.

  • Provide instruction, supervision, and training for university students through lectures, projects, practicums, and internships.

  • Keep up to date on current recreation practices and trends in the profession. Maintain professional licensure and certifications through continuing education and promote Northeast Passage through presentations, articles, research or other opportunities when possible.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • BS/BA or Certificate of Advanced Study degree in Therapeutic Recreation.

  • Valid driver’s license and clear motor vehicle records and background check.·

  • Demonstrated ability to work well independently and as part of a team.

  • Able to manage and prioritize multiple tasks.

  • Desire to work in fast-paced environment.

  • Creative problem-solving skills.

  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Experience with a wide range of adaptive and typical recreation equipment and sports including but not limited to wheelchairs, handcycles, trikes, water skis, golf, kayaks, crafts and archery.

  • Experience with customary hand tools and small power tools to repair, and/or modify equipment.

  • Maintain flexible schedule consistent with recreation programs including evenings and occasional weekends.

  • Willingness to provide programs in all weather conditions.

  • Direct work experience in delivering adaptive recreation programming.

This position is 32 hours per-week (80% time) and will work across Northeast Passage teams primarily within Competitive Sports and Adaptive Sports & Recreation programs.
