Job Description:

The neurology service sees primary and referral patients with neurologic symptoms or diseases. In addition to neurological processes involving the brain or spinal cord, neurological process can affect nerves in any part of the body and would fall within the care and assessment of the neurology service. Technicians are involved in support of the efficiency, teaching, patient care, and client experience of this service. Technicians will provide support for a variety of general and specialized procedures, utilizing skills for patient care as well as instruction. The neurology service is an important part of the clinical training of clinical veterinary students as well as specialty training of DVMs seeking specialty training to become boarded as veterinary Neurologists. Technicians provide instruction to veterinary students in technical procedures, hospital policy, and organize and manage daily clinical tasks to enhance service efficiency and effectiveness. In collaboration with faculty, house officers, and veterinary students, technicians are to support the service and teaching missions of the teaching hospital.

Job Responsibilities:

Veterinary Technician 1

20% Assist with restraint and positioning for a variety of techniques. Basic restraint for exams and procedures such as venipuncture to advanced positioning and restraint for advanced procedures such as cisternal CSF taps. Assist with lifting all sizes and weights of patients, assist in ambulation both indoors and outdoors. Assist with providing recumbency care to avoid common issues such as decubital sores and treating patients with these issues if they arise, by frequently changing their position, and applying appropriate methods for padding and avoiding pressure, bandages and wound care.

20% Assist with palpating urinary bladders, estimating quantity, and thoroughly expressing bladders on male and female cats and dogs. Placement and troubleshooting of urinary catheters both indwelling and temporary. Assist with diagnostic sample collection (urine, blood etc.) and appropriate preparation, protocol, handling and submission of samples for example blood cultures. Assist with placement of IV catheters and troubleshooting issues.

20% Assist with all aspects of minor procedures (set-up, instrumentation and size selection, follow-up care, clean up) such as muscle biopsy and electrodiagnostics as well as assisting in surgery, for example a craniotomy or sinusotomy. Comfortable with sterile technique. Learning and adhering to sample care and appropriate submission both in-house and to outside labs, local and national.

20% Assist with client communication and scheduling patient appointments and procedures. Communicate and maintain a record of such with rDVMs, clients, and other outside providers (diagnostic centers, or special-order entities for devices are supplements). Assist with maintaining complete records, estimates, and entering charges.

15% Assist with performing student service orientation with every block change. Other related duties as they pertain to the operation of the small animal hospital and specifically the support of the neurology service. Participate in the small animal blood bank and take on call for blood bank. Participate and meet the requirements and obligations of holiday assignments in support of SA ICU and ER as scheduled. Respond as called upon as an emergency response personnel in the event of activation in response to any number and variety of emergent situations, to include outside normal duty hours and shift length. 

5% Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree OR Associate’s degree in veterinary technology; OR CVT or equivalent; OR 3 years of experience in a working environment with similar duties.

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree OR CVT or equivalent; 2 years in a veterinary practice and/or hospital setting.

Veterinary Technician 2

Preferred Qualifications:

Bachelor's Degree OR CVT or equivalent; 4 years in a veterinary practice and/or hospital setting.

Veterinary Technician 3

Job Competencies (ALL LEVELS):

Knowledge of basic animal care and handling including restraint

Knowledge of medical terminology, basic anatomy, and abbreviations 

Basic computer skills, problem-solving and communication skills

Knowledge of proper medical record keeping (paper and electronic)

Math skills; including drug calculations (dosage & conversions)

Operation of equipment, diagnostic tests and hand held analyzers (eg. Glucometer) 

Anesthetic monitoring and recovery

Ability to collect blood from a number of different sites by venipuncture

Proper administration of oral, sub-cutaneous, intra muscular, and intra venous medications

Special or Physical Qualifications (ALL LEVELS):

Able to answer phone calls after hours from students for issues regarding department.  Required to work a variety of shifts including nights, weekends, and holidays. 


Per PS 18- This position is a part of the Emergency Response Personnel - these personnel are linked with the hospital during any emergency response event and are expected to report in and perform as outlined in the emergency response plan.


Required to be capable of lifting more than 50 pounds, standing or walking for prolonged periods, able to reach above and below the shoulder, vision (near sight), vision (far sight), kneel or sit on the floor, push/pulling, grasping, climbing, crawling bending, squatting, and/or twisting.
