Job Title: Floating Substitute Teacher

Reports to: Building Principal
Work Schedule: As Assigned (Full-Day or Partial-Day Assignments)

Position Summary

The Floating Substitute Teacher provides instructional coverage and support for classrooms across multiple grade levels and subject areas within the district. This position ensures consistent learning opportunities by maintaining classroom routines, implementing lesson plans, and fostering a positive, safe, and inclusive learning environment when the regular teacher is absent.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Provide instructional support to students based on lesson plans prepared by classroom teachers.

  • Manage classroom behavior and maintain a positive learning environment consistent with district expectations.

  • Adapt to different grade levels, subjects, and instructional settings as needed.

  • Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and during transitions.

  • Communicate effectively with staff, administrators, and support personnel to ensure continuity of instruction.

  • Maintain accurate attendance records and complete required reports or documentation.

  • Follow all district policies, procedures, and professional standards.

  • Support school events, testing, and other instructional activities as assigned.

  • Be flexible to move between school sites based on district needs.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum of an Associate’s Degree or higher (Bachelor’s Degree preferred).

  • Valid Washington State Substitute Teaching Certificate or Emergency Substitute Certificate required.

  • Experience working with students in an educational setting preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Strong classroom management and organizational skills.

  • Ability to follow lesson plans and adapt to varying instructional needs.

  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills with students, staff, and families.

  • Dependable, flexible, and able to work across multiple classrooms and grade levels.

  • Commitment to maintaining confidentiality and professionalism.

Working Conditions

  • Work may occur in multiple classrooms and school buildings throughout the day.

  • Regular interaction with students, staff, and parents.

  • Requires standing, walking, and supervising student activities indoors and outdoors.

MAJOR FUNCTION AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

 

Instruction: (a) Establish appropriate learning objectives for students; (b) Plan, implement, and conduct instructional experiences directed to the learning objectives; (c) Assess students’ achievement of objectives.

 

Classroom management: (a) Maintain an atmosphere conducive to learning;   (b) Take full advantage of all resources and materials available that are appropriate to students' needs, subject matter, and objectives.

 

Supervision: (a) Supervision students as assigned both in the classroom and in activities; (b) Assist in supervision of students throughout the building and grounds.

 

Professional Growth:  (a) Participate in the appropriate in service and career development activities; (b) Keep current in the education field;  (c) Collaborate with the other teachers in the building to plan and implement courses assigned in their respective discipline.

 

Communication:  Keep parents current as to the progress of their student(s).

 

Responsible for implementing State and Federal guidelines for educating Children.

 

Other duties as assigned.

 

  1. Minimum Qualifications: 
  1. Current Washington State Teaching certificate
  2. Ability to communicate effectively and work collaboratively with support services staff
  3. Ability to provide instruction to students of diverse backgrounds and learning styles
  4. Ability to motivate students to become engaged in their education
  5. Effectively use student achievement data to provide instruction
  6. Bilingual and biliterate

    Preferred Qualifications: 
  1. The ability and desire to direct students towards rigorous, relevant classes and applications
  2. Knowledge of Artz-Fox Elementary School improvement plan goals and objectives.
  3. Ability to develop engaging strategies and activities to illustrate the importance of education to students.
  4. EL endorsement

WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
MENTAL DEMANDS
Required to deal with a wide range of student, staff and public behaviors and needs in a positive and service-oriented
manner. May occasionally deal with distraught or difficult students or parents.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
Amount of standing, sitting, walking, bending, and twisting will vary depending on the age of students and classroom
assignments. Physical capabilities also require lifting and carrying (no more than 50 lbs.) pushing and/or pulling,
stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, twisting, and significant finger dexterity. Generally, the job requires
approximately 35% sitting, 35% walking, and 30% standing. Maintaining good hygiene is essential.
