Hillsboro Public Library is excited to invite applications for the Library Support Specialist position! As part of our dynamic and customer-centered team, Library Support Specialists are the welcoming face of the Library—helping connect people with resources, information, and one another. We are currently filling one full-time position at our Shute Park Branch and will also use this recruitment to establish an eligibility list to fill future full-time, part-time (20+ hours), limited duration, and flexibly staffed vacancies. This eligibility list will remain active for a period of nine (9) months from the closing date of this posting or until the list is exhausted, whichever occurs first.

What You’ll Be Doing

  • Provide exceptional customer service to patrons in person, by phone, and online—assisting with library accounts, locating materials, providing notary services, downloading e-books, and navigating digital resources.
  • Become an expert in library systems and policies, helping patrons with questions, account issues, and checkouts in ways that build understanding and trust.
  • Support a variety of service points, including welcome desks, technology areas, the Collaboratory (Maker Space), youth services, and holds.
  • Promote an engaging library environment by shelving, tidying spaces, restocking displays, and maintaining order.
  • Contribute to library programs and outreach—from storytimes and book groups to special events that connect the community.
  • In addition to the regular Library Support Specialist duties, this schedule includes a weekly storytime—an engaging opportunity to spark curiosity, connect with families, and create positive, lasting first impressions of the library. 
  • Embrace ongoing training and development opportunities to stay current with evolving library technologies and practices.
  • Collaborate with teammates across departments to ensure smooth daily operations and an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere.

Anticipated Work Schedule

  • Sunday: 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM
  • Monday: 11:15 AM – 8:15 PM
  • Tuesday–Thursday: 9:15 AM – 6:15 PM

Minimum Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED; and

  • Three years of customer service experience, including at least one year in a library setting; or

  • An equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to perform the essential duties of the position.

Licenses/Certifications

Depending on assignment, some positions may require:
  • Valid Driver’s License and safe driving record.

  • Positions assigned to the Connect work area must obtain and maintain a State of Oregon Notary Public Commission within six months of hire.

Other Qualifications

Bilingual incentive pay available
Preference may be given to candidates who are bilingual in Spanish/English.
  
Employees who can demonstrate the ability to speak Spanish, or any language spoken by over ten percent (10%) of City residents as documented by the most recent U.S. Census, at a proficiency level determined by a fluency test administered by the City, will receive a monthly premium of three percent (3%) of their regular base pay.
