INTERNAL POSTING.
The base annual wage is generated from a base hourly rate of $32.46 per hour under the standard rotating 12 hour shift schedule. Overtime is paid at 1.5 times the hourly rate for all hours worked in excess of 40 hours in a 7 day pay cycle. Additional overtime opportunities for shift coverage may be available per departmental policy. These opportunities would provide pay in excess of the estimated base annual wage.
The purpose of the class is to coordinate and supervise the operations, personnel and maintenance of assigned station; to ensure prompt and proper station response to medical emergencies; to enforce crew compliance with all applicable policies, procedures, protocols and standards of quality and safety; to respond to emergency calls; to provide medical assistance at the paramedic level; and to perform related supervisory and technical work as required. The class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.
Position Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
• Coordinates and supervises daily operations, building and equipment maintenance and records maintenance at assigned emergency medical station.
• Supervises assigned emergency medical personnel. Supervisory duties include scheduling,
instructing; assigning, reviewing and planning work of others; maintaining standards;
coordinating activities; selecting new employees; testing new hires; allocating personnel; acting on crew problems; recommending employee discipline; and recommending discharge as appropriate.
• Reviews the work of assigned employees for completeness and accuracy; evaluates and makes recommendations as appropriate; and offers advice and assistance as needed.
• Participates in training and development activities for new hires and assigned staff; performs skill verification for station personnel.
• Receives calls to service; ensures that proper ambulance(s) and personnel are dispatched to the scene.
• Oversees and participates in the maintenance of assigned station, equipment and vehicles;
ensures station, vehicles and equipment remain in a constant state of readiness for emergencies and decontamination is conducted when needed; inspects equipment for proper working condition; performs minor maintenance and cleaning as necessary; and makes arrangements for maintenance by other County personnel or outside service providers as needed.
• Participates and supervises assigned infection control measures for both the station and the ambulance.
• Responds to emergency calls as incident commander; ensures safety at the scene; and requests additional resources for the control of incidents as required.
• Serves as sector commander during emergencies involving mass casualties.
• Drives ambulance in response to emergency calls as needed.
• Provides advanced life support and emergency care to the sick and injured; determines nature or extent of injuries or illnesses; assists in lifting and carrying patients in and out of ambulance; and transports patients to appropriate medical facility.
• Performs such procedures as immobilization and bandaging, Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), intubation, cardiac activity monitoring, preventing shock, administering medications, electrical cardioversion and/or defibrillation, IV therapy, and others as permitted according to certification; maintains constant awareness of patient condition; identifies and relays diagnostic signs to medical personnel while in route to medical facility; and reports verbally in writing to emergency room personnel upon arrival.
• Assists with extrication and other rescue procedures as necessary.
• Works in conjunction with other first responders such as firefighters and law enforcement,
hospital staff, and physicians; collaborates with other agencies as needed.
• Educates patients and their families about condition, medications and/or disease process.
• Notifies dispatch personnel and Coroner's Office in case of patient death; arranges for the
protection of property and evidence at the scene.
• Prepares and/or reviews run reports documenting patient care, response time, compliance with medical protocol and patient billing information; prepares and/or reviews unit, shift and station reports.
• Documents accident scenes for reports as required.
• Supervises and ensures assigned employees comply with infection control procedures after exposure.
• Monitors the clinical activities of the crew assigned to station, reviews for quality control and compliance.
• Reviews and recommends new equipment for acquisition and use by the station and
department.
• Receives a verbal turnover from the off going crew; receives a physical turnover of narcotics and controlled medications from the off going Crew Chief; performs a complete inventory of the entire ambulance; and ensures the maintenance of an adequate inventory of station supplies and equipment.
• Participates in public education/community relations efforts and events as required.
• Receives and responds to public inquiries, complaints and requests for assistance in areas of responsibility.
• Performs general administrative/clerical work as required, including but not limited to preparing reports and correspondence, copying and filing documents, entering and retrieving computer data, answering the telephone, etc.
• Keeps abreast of new technology, methods and regulations for emergency medical assistance operations; attends meetings, training and continuing education classes as required and/or appropriate to enhance job knowledge and skills and maintain certifications.
• May need to be available 24 hours per day, seven days per week, for emergency response as assigned.
• Performs other related job duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualifications
High school diploma or GED supplemented by education in emergency medical technology or a closely related field. Associate's degree preferred.
Requires at least three (3) years of related work experience.
Special Qualifications:
Must possess a valid state driver's license.
Must complete required coursework and maintain State and National Registry of EMT's certification in Emergency Medical Technician (EMT- Paramedic), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), International Trauma Life Support (ITLS), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS); instructorship certifications for each; and obtain any other certifications deemed necessary by Department Head.
Must complete a minimum of 60 hours continued education (CEUs) per year.
