About the Department

Under the general supervision of the Fleet Superintendent, this FLSA-exempt position has immediate charge of the Fleet Maintenance Department. This position supervises the employees and the automotive mechanical work in maintenance and repair of ordinary, heavy, and specialized automotive vehicles and equipment.   


This job description is an overview and is intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed.  It’s not intended to be an exhaustive list of all the functions and tasks required of the position.

Position Duties

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:


  • Maintains a customer friendly environment
  • Coordinates repair and maintenance services to obtain maximum utilization of equipment and prevent operational delays  
  • Prioritizes the repair and maintenance of vehicles and equipment and creates employee schedules 
  • Prepares estimates and arranges approval for repairs with customers 
  • Plans, assigns, supervises, inspects, evaluates and participates in the work of subordinate fleet employees
  • Maintains and updates utilization, repair, and overall cost files and records in accordance with established procedures
  • Accountable for procurement of materials, supplies and parts required to maintain the equipment and garages   
  • Monitors work activities to ensures compliance with OSHA, safety standards, City regulations, environmental regulations, and other established policies and procedures
  • Makes recommendations for changes and improvements to existing standards and procedures
  • Assists in the formulation of the annual budget for the department
  • Responds to emergency situations while on call


IMPORTANT FUNCTIONS: 


  • Participate in the selection of staff
  • Perform the duties of similar classifications of an equal or lower pay grade
  • Stay abreast of new trends and innovations in the field of automotive and heavy equipment


PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:


The physical attributes an employee must have in order to perform the essential job duties with or without a reasonable accommodation include:  


  • Moderate to heavy physical work requiring ability to lift a maximum of 100 pounds
  • Frequent lifting and carrying of objects weighing up to 25 pounds
  • Regular walking and standing
  • Frequent performance of activities requiring a full range of body movement including bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, climbing and crawling
  • Considerable hand/eye/foot coordination to operate tools and equipment; some foot/eye coordination for driving equipment and vehicles;
  • Vision to read automotive manuals, gauges and meters; speech and hearing to receive or give technical information and instructions

Minimum Qualifications

  • Thorough knowledge of the operating and mechanical features of ordinary, heavy and specialized automotive vehicles and equipment.  
  • Thorough knowledge of the advanced methods, techniques, tools, equipment, materials, and shop practices involved in motor vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair
  • Knowledge of the principles of supervision, training, and performance management
  • Demonstrated mechanical ability in gasoline and diesel engines is required  
  • Ability to plan, organize, assign, supervise and evaluate the work of Journeyman mechanics and related workers
  • Knowledge of the principles and best practices of filing and record keeping, and skill and ability to maintain operating records and reports 
  • Ability to follow modern administrative and supervisory techniques used in the operation of a parts/tool room in a fleet maintenance program 
  • Skilled at following OSHA, safety and environmental regulations  
  • Must be able to work successfully with and provide good customer service to supervisors, other City employees, the public and other agencies and organizations
  • Ability to effectively communicate both verbally and in writing 
  • Computer skills including the ability to perform data entry and to maintain related records, including computerized inventory and stock control accountability systems
  • Knowledge, skill and ability to successfully perform the essential duties of the Auto Mechanic classification

Other Qualifications

In addition to the knowledge, skills and abilities listed above, the position requires:


  • A high school diploma, G.E.D., or higher education
  • Currently certified A.S.E Master Auto or Master Truck
  • At least seven (7) years of successful, experience as a mechanic in a motor assembly, automobile repair or machine shop 
  • At least four (4) years of experience in a supervisory capacity in a related environment; and
  • A valid driver’s license at the time of application, and a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment
    • License restrictions that may hinder your ability to drive on City business, such as an interlock, will be cause for disqualification 
    • During the course of employment, a valid license must be maintained, and the employee must notify the City immediately upon changes to the status of their license


SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT


  • Work is performed primarily in an automotive repair shop with frequent time spent outdoors in all types of weather conditions; regular exposure to dust, noise and fumes related to heavy equipment repair. 
  • Must, within six months of hire or promotion, possess and maintain an unrestricted Colorado Class “A” CDL. 
  • Incumbent is expected to be able to respond to emergencies within 30 minutes
  • Within six months of hire or promotion, the applicant must possess and maintain An EPA approved certification for motor vehicle air conditioning servicing and repair.
  • All required licenses and certifications must be maintained throughout the term of employment.  Failure to obtain or maintain licenses and certifications may result in demotion or termination.  


Due to Federal and State Criminal Justice System access requirements, classifications that access and maintain criminal justice information may also be required, as a condition of employment, to not have been convicted of and/or have pending charges of a felony or misdemeanor crime that would deny or otherwise restrict access to criminal justice information.  This requirement applies to all existing City employees as well as external candidates seeking to fill positions that meet the given criteria.
