The Minnesota Star Tribune offers a 10-week summer software engineering internship with our Product Engineering team. In this role, you'll have the opportunity to learn how we build and maintain the digital products that power our award-winning news platform.
This internship is ideal for someone who is early in their software engineering journey and eager to gain real-world experience in a collaborative and inclusive environment. You'll work alongside experienced engineers and have opportunities to contribute to both internal and external tools.
Interns will work 40 hours per week for 10 weeks between June and August for $26/hr.
What you'll do:
- Learn to build and maintain software with support from your team
- Assist with small frontend or backend tasks using TypeScript and frameworks like React or NextJS
- Collaborate with designers, product managers, and engineers to understand and implement features
- Participate in team activities such as standups, sprint planning, and code reviews
- Gain exposure to how we deploy and support production systems
What we’re looking for:
- Some experience with coding, either through coursework, personal projects, or previous internships
- Interest in web development and modern frameworks like React, NextJS, NestJS or similar
- Familiarity with JavaScript, Typescript, or similar languages
- Curiosity, willingness to learn, and the ability to ask good questions
Nice to haves (but not required):
- Basic understanding of Git and version control tools Exposure to backend technologies or APIs
- Exposure to Typescript is a plus Experience using GitHub or similar tools
- Familiarity with cloud platforms like AWS or deployment concepts
This internship is designed for learning and growth. You don't need to know everything—we're here to help you develop the skills you need to succeed as an engineer.
Preferred qualifications
- College sophomore, junior, senior, graduate student or recent graduate
- Excellent communication and problem-solving skills
- Experience articulating design thinking, and a resilience to hear and act on critiques
- The ability to juggle multiple projects at once
- Experience using Figma to create wireframes and high-fidelity designs
- Strong organizational skills
- A track record of collaboration
- The ability to learn new concepts quickly
