The City of Fullerton is in search of a skilled and dependable Water Lead Worker to join our Public Works team. In this vital role, you’ll oversee multiple crews working on the construction, maintenance, and repair of the City’s water infrastructure. You'll take the lead in coordinating the system valve and fire hydrant preventative maintenance program, review and sign off on completed work, and help keep crews on schedule as projects move through to completion.
What You’ll Be Doing
Coordinating and participating in water system maintenance, repair, and construction
Leading the system valve and fire hydrant preventative maintenance program, including scheduling, recordkeeping, and field work
Sign off on work orders after verifying quality, safety, and accuracy
Work closely with crews to keep multiple projects on track and meet daily goals
Training and assisting team members in proper maintenance methods and safe work practices
Tracking completed work, material, and equipment through the City's work management software
What We’re Looking For
Experience: 3+ years of experience in water/sewer construction, maintenance, and repair, including expertise in leading or coordinating field work
Education: Coursework, training, and certifications related to water systems, water distribution, and/or utility maintenance
Skills: Ability to coordinate multiple active projects, have strong teamwork, communication, and organization skills.
Knowledge: Solid understanding of water distribution systems, preventative maintenance practices, and system safety standards

The current vacancy is in the Water Distribution division. The list established for this recruitment is good for one year and may be used to fill future vacancies in the Distribution, Metering, and Production divisions as needed.
Future salary increase
+ 3% eff. July 4, 2026 $5,973 - $7,623 per mo.
Position Duties
Education and Experience:
Any combination of training and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is considered qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required qualifications is:
Graduation from high school.
AND
Three years of increasingly responsible experience within the water division of a municipality or special district, to include water facility maintenance or construction and repair.
Special Requirements:
A valid Grade 3 Water Distribution Operator Certification issued by the State of California Water Board. The certification is required at the time of application and is required to be maintained throughout employment in this position.
A valid Class A California Driver's license* and acceptable driving record at the time of application and throughout employment in this position.
Must be able to work a flexible schedule to accommodate City needs, which includes overtime and emergency call-back.
*Employees who possess a Class A California Driver's license and enroll in the U.S. Department of Transportation program receive an additional $50 per pay period.
Physical Tasks and Working Conditions Include the Following:
Work is performed indoors and outdoors. When work is performed outdoors, there is full exposure to the elements. An incumbent performs physical labor requiring physical strength and endurance and drives a vehicle on City business. An incumbent may work in confined spaces, under damp conditions, and crouch, sit, stand, walk on slippery and/or uneven surfaces, bend, crawl, kneel, pull, reach, push, twist, climb ladders and sloping surfaces, and grasp, drag, lift, and carry items weighing 75 pounds or less. Incumbents may be exposed to chemicals, solvents, sewage, paint, dust, grease/oil, fumes, electrical and mechanical hazards, vehicular traffic, vibration and noise, and must be able to meet the physical requirements of the class and have mobility, vision, sense of smell, hearing, and dexterity levels appropriate to the duties to be performed.

Assessment Process:

Current City of Fullerton employees may be given preference during the testing and/or selection process.
Appointment:
Employment offers are conditional upon the successful completion of a background check. The background check will include fingerprinting, verified by the State of California Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation. Certain positions may require a more extensive background check and/or a medical examination conducted by the City’s designated physician at the City’s expense. Medical examinations assess an individual’s ability to meet the physical requirements of the position. Additionally, all new hires and employees appointed to safety-sensitive classifications must undergo a drug screening.
An appointee will serve a 12-month probationary period. Regular City employees promoted to this position will serve a 6-month probationary period.
