Job Description and Responsibilities

Interpro Pipe & Steel currently seeking a Research Engineer with a specialty in welding technology. This technically challenging position will participate in all aspects of our steel research program with a particular focus on welding high strength line pipe, with additional support for welding structural steel and railroad rail.

  • Direct research projects as defined by the Company's R&D program, including internal and external laboratories and customer, industry, university, and government partners.

  • Plan, conduct, and report on mill trials and development activities in support of divisional goals and objectives

  • Analyze short-term production and quality issues, coordinate failure analysis, and report findings and recommendations as required

  • Conduct steel research with a particular focus on projects related to welding high strength line pipe and structural steel

  • Represent Company's interests in relevant standards committees

  • Direct the work of technicians and co-op students conducting laboratory tests and analyses

  • Develop test procedures as required to meet goals and objectives of R&D project work

  • Ensure laboratory equipment is maintained

  • Oversee capital acquisitions related to R&D

  • Participate in H2S rescue training (the R&D facility houses an H2S corrosion testing facility, all team members participate in rescue training)

Requirements

  • M.Sc. or Ph.D. in Metallurgical, Mechanical, or Welding Engineering

  • 4 years’ experience with Ph.D. or 8 years’ experience with M.Sc. Other levels of experience may be considered for a Welding Research Engineer role at a corresponding seniority level.

  • Preference will be given to candidates with experience in electric resistance welding, submerged arc welding, gas metal arc welding, and/or shielded metal arc welding, particularly in line pipe steel.

  • Strong English communication and presentation skills and the ability to work in a cross-functional team environment are required.

  • Knowledge of welding processes and metallurgy is required.

  • Knowledge of weld testing and characterization is required.

  • Ability to travel to various company, partner, or customer facilities outside of the work location will be expected and the ability to freely travel between the US and Canada is required.

  • Knowledge of general line pipe product standards and specifications (API, CSA, ASTM, NACE/AMPP, ASME, etc.) is an asset.

  • Knowledge of statistical design and analysis of experiments is an asset.
