About the Department
EXAMINATION SCHEDULE:
- Oral exam: will be conducted on Friday, November 21, 2025.
Examinations:
Oral Exam (Weight 100%): Will be conducted for the purpose of appraising the applicant's training, education, experience, interest, and personal fitness for the position.
Applicants must attain at least a 70% score on each phase of the examination process.
Examination components for promotional testing will be administered during the scheduled date(s)/time(s)/location without exception.
Minimum Qualifications/ Employment Standards:
Positions Assigned to the Kern County Fire Department:
Five years experience in the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy-duty motorized equipment, including experience with diesel engines, fire trucks, pumps, or related equipment.
Positions Assigned to the Kern County Public Works Department:
Five years experience in the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy-duty motorized equipment which include diesel, gasoline, or compressed natural gas vehicles, two years of which must include the repair of heavy diesel-powered equipment, such as motor graders, loaders, skid steers, compactors, single and tandem axle dump trucks, tractors, transit buses, or other related equipment.
Positions Assigned to the General Services Fleet Services Division:
Five years experience in the maintenance and repair of medium and heavy-duty motorized equipment which include diesel, gasoline, or compressed natural gas vehicles, two years of which must include the repair of heavy diesel-powered equipment, such as motor graders, loaders, skid steers, compactors, single and tandem axle dump trucks, tractors, transit buses or other related equipment.
All Positions:
Possession of a valid Class "A" California Driver's License.

Admittance to the examination will require a valid government issued photograph identification. Applicants who are unable to present proper identification must make arrangements with the Human Resources Division prior to the test date.
A background check may be conducted for this classification.
Following an offer of employment, you may be required to submit to post offer medical and drug screening tests at County expense.
This examination will establish an eligible list from which one (1) immediate appointment will be made at the Public Works Department. Other permanent and temporary appointments will be made as needed.
Successful candidates will remain on the eligible list for a period of twelve-months, unless specified otherwise by the Civil Service Commission.
