Position Summary

This part-time, relief role is a great opportunity to gain valuable experience in the maintenance field. The Maintenance Helper performs routine and intermediate maintenance and repairs of Zoo facilities. They complete work both independently, and under the supervision of the Maintenance Manager and Maintenance Technicians. Pay Rate: To maintain internal equity, we have identified the payrate for this position at the Oakland Zoo as $26.30 per hour. An offer at this payrate will be our best and final compensation offer. 

Essential Job Duties:

  • Perform routine repairs and maintenance of zoo facilities, rides, and vehicles. 
  • Work on maintenance projects around the zoo.  
  • Read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions and procedure manuals. Write routine reports and correspondence.  
  • Perform painting and carpentry duties as needed. 
  • Undergo further training as needed.  
  • Perform other related duties as required and assigned. 

 

Who you are:

  • At least 18 years of age. 
  • Experience performing maintenance work. 
  • Excellent judgment and the ability to follow detailed instructions are necessary to complete projects/assignments. 
  • Ability to work weekends, holidays, and in all types of weather. 

      Bonus if you have:

      • Experience with HVAC servicing and repair, operating powered equipment and welding knowledge. 
      • Basic knowledge of general construction practices. 

      Physical Considerations:

      • Able to bend and twist, lift, stand, kneel, sit, walk, bend, stoop and speak regularly and for long periods of time (8 hour shifts)
      • Ability to lift and carry 50 lbs. The role involves physical activities such as lifting heavy equipment, bending, stooping, and working in various weather conditions.
