Director-Clinical Risk ManagementJob Summary:
Provides operational and clinical leadership to a comprehensive program of clinical risk management, patient safety, and high reliability focused on minimizing the occurrence of adverse events and reducing risk from such events. Works with health system leadership to develop an effective clinical risk management infrastructure. Promotes early reporting of adverse events, investigation, and system improvements to reduce the risk of recurrence of events. Works with claims risk management on early disclosure of events to patients and family as appropriate.Standardizes and implements policies and procedures related to the practice of clinical risk management across the health system. Participates in the UMMC system-wide data collection software for event reporting, management and follow up. Designs and implements a system wide education to support the initiatives. Ensures compliance with applicable laws, accrediting agencies and professional standards.
Education & Experience
Bachelor’s degree in a health-related field. Master's Degree preferred. Ten (10) years minimum experience in a clinical setting with five (5) of the ten (10) years in Risk Management, Patient Safety or Quality. Academic Medical Center experience preferred.
CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES OR REGISTRATION REQUIRED: Appropriate clinical license based on training and Certified Professional in Healthcare Risk Management (CPHRM) required. Certified Professional in Patient Safety (CPPS) within 18 months of hire.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
Strong understanding of the associations between clinical, claims, and legal risk disciplines required. Strong leadership and interpersonal skills, including proven ability to collaborate with physician and executive leadership. Exceptional communication and influencing skills are required at multiple levels of the organization, from front line teams to executive leadership. Proven ability to build and effectively manage functional teams around clinical risk management.
Responsibilities
- In collaboration with the Chief Medical Officer, manages and implements a system-wide clinical risk management program.
- Develops and implements standardized policies, procedures and practice standards as they relate to clinical risk management.
- Oversees the triage, investigation, action plans for clinical adverse events reported to risk management. Supervises the analysis and trending of organizational adverse events.
- Maintains communication with executive leadership, hospital leadership, and hospital risk departments on clinical risk management programs. Collaborates effectively with members of the Office of General Counsel, and the Office of Patient Experience.
- Defines and leads resource needs and allocation to manage performance.
- Designs and implements an enterprise-wide educational program on health care risk management, patient safety, safety culture, and related subjects to minimize the frequency and reduce the severity of actual or potential risks throughout the health system.
