Job Summary The Special Education Paraprofessional supports the instructional and behavioral needs of students with disabilities in an elementary school setting. This position works under the direct supervision of licensed teachers to implement Individualized Education Programs (IEPs), promote student independence, and maintain a safe, supportive learning environment.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assist the classroom teacher in implementing instructional activities, accommodations, and modifications as outlined in students’ IEPs.
Provide one-on-one or small-group support to students in academic, behavioral, and social-emotional areas.
Support students with personal care needs as required (e.g., feeding, toileting, mobility assistance).
Reinforce positive behavior strategies and help manage classroom behavior under teacher direction.
Supervise students in classrooms, hallways, cafeterias, playgrounds, and on school transportation when assigned.
Assist with data collection and documentation of student progress toward IEP goals.
Prepare instructional materials and adapt classroom resources to meet student needs.
Collaborate with teachers, administrators, related service providers, and families to support student learning and growth.
Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in compliance with federal and state laws (FERPA, IDEA).
Perform other duties as assigned by the supervising teacher or principal.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to work effectively with children, particularly those with disabilities.
Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Patience, flexibility, and ability to remain calm in challenging situations.
Ability to follow written and oral instructions from supervising staff.
Basic knowledge of instructional strategies and behavior management.
Commitment to maintaining student dignity, respect, and inclusion.
Qualifications
High school diploma or GED required.
Associate’s degree, completion of two years of postsecondary education, or successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment (as required by ESSA/Title I regulations).
Prior experience working with children, preferably in a school or childcare setting.
Training in crisis intervention, CPR, and first aid preferred (may be required by the school division).
Work Environment
Elementary school classroom and campus settings.
May require lifting, positioning, or physically assisting students with mobility or personal care needs.
May involve exposure to bodily fluids when assisting with personal care.
Reports to: Principal Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) status: Non -Exempt Months/Days/Hours: 10 months, 182 days, 7 hours per day Salary Scale: Paraprofessional Benefits: Standard Employee Benefit Pay Scales can be found at: http://https://www.pcva.us/o/pcva/page/hr-salary-scales-2025-2026
