Required
- Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from high school or possession of a General Equivalency Diploma (GED) certificate.
- Five (5) years of experience in one or more of the trades under supervision to include, air conditioning, refrigeration, commercial boiler systems and steam fitting repairs, one (1) year of which shall have been in a supervisory role.
- Advanced degree(s) beyond the minimum degree requirement in a relevant field may be considered for some experience.
- Possession of a valid EPA-approved universal refrigerant recovery certification to include types I, II, and III.
- Possession of a valid Commonwealth of Virginia master mechanical's license.
- Possession of an appropriate, valid motor vehicle operator's license with a good driving record.
- May be required to work an evening and/or night shift on a regular or rotating basis, and/or agree to assume an emergency call-out list status.
- Knowledge of procedures, techniques, materials, equipment, and tools involved in a wide variety of installation, maintenance, and repair activities of all trades supervised.
- Skill in performance of the work and good knowledge of local, state, and national codes where applicable.
- Ability to plan, organize, direct, and provide technical assistance to a large group of trade employees.
- Ability to make independent judgments and decisions within established policies and to interpret policies for subordinates.
- Ability to read and interpret work orders, diagrams, sketches, blueprints, and manufacturers' manuals.
- Ability to make sketches and drawings.
- Ability to estimate costs of work performed.
- Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Ability to keep accurate records and prepare reports.
- Ability to maintain good interpersonal relations.
Preferred
- Completion of an acceptable apprentice-level HVAC training program.

Major Duties/Essential Functions
- Plans and schedules the day-to-day operation and activities of a group of technicians engaged in the maintenance and repair of a wide variety of commercial and residential single zone, multizone rooftop units, central air conditioning, heat pump systems, cleaning of large commercial HVAC units, boiler systems and insulation repair and replacement, repair or installation of gas/oil-fired or electric commercial/residential type hot water/steam boilers, electrical heating units and related gravity/forced air systems for schools, offices, and centers.
- Enforces established policies, plans, methods, procedures, deadlines, and priorities.
- Oversees assigning, oversight, evaluation, and management of work.
- Ensures proper communication and interaction with mechanical departments, school staff, and superiors.
- Coordinates activities with personnel in various shops.
- Ensures subordinates have proper training and diagnostic equipment.
- Assists technicians with problematic or difficult repairs.
- Keeps customers informed of the status of repairs and other work with a high focus on customer service.
- Performs system condition evaluations.
- Performs other related duties as required or assigned.
