Position Overview:


Performs moderate-complexity laboratory testing in a fast-paced laboratory environment. maintain laboratory equipment and perform routine lab procedures, such as preparation of lab media and samples. Maintains, updates and stores records; takes stock of inventory and supplies and maintain clean and sanitary work areas. Works primarily autonomously, but subject to change with growth. As a lab resource person, The Lab Service Technician provides support to providers, teammates and patients. Assists with lab-related projects and other tasks as needed.


Essential Functions:

  • Performs laboratory procedures for specimen handling and processing, test analyses, reports and maintains records of patient results. 
  • Adheres to laboratory quality control policies and documents all quality control activities, instrument and procedural calibrations, and instrument maintenance. 
  • Follows laboratory policy whenever test systems are not within the laboratory’s established acceptable levels of performance.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken when test systems and/or testing procedures deviate from the laboratory’s established performance specifications. 
  • Performs quality control and proficiency testing as required by office policy and regulations.
  • Adheres to office, COLA, OSHA and DHEC rules, regulations and policies.
  • Maintains lab supplies: Keeps track of supplies levels and notifies Lab Team Lead when needing to order. Routinely inspects supplies containing expiration dates to assure the valid dates of use and destroys those outdated supplies as required by state licenses, general practices and procedures.
  • Enhances professional growth and development through participation in education programs, current literature, in-service meetings and workshops. Attends meetings as required. 
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations.
  • Performs additional tasks as assigned by manager. 

Requirements

 Qualifications:

  • High school diploma/GED required.
  • One year experience in a medical setting required, preferably as a Medical Assistant, Phlebotomist, or Medical Laboratory Technician/Assistant. Must be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills required to competently perform the duties of this position.
  • BLS Certification, preferred.
  • Strong ability to work independently, organize, prioritize, and problem solve.
  • Proficiency in Laboratory Information System (Labdaq) and electronic medical records (eCW) preferred.
  • Ability to adapt to various work assignments.
  • Certification as a Medical Laboratory Assistant (MLA) or Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) preferred.
  • Possess knowledge of approved medical abbreviations and correct spelling of the English language.
  • Ability to instruct others.
  • Possess good customer service skills and exceptional telephone etiquette.
  • Previous computer experience helpful.

Work environment and Physical demands:


Prolonged, extensive or considerable standing/walking. Lifts supplies and equipment up to 40 pounds. Considerable reaching, stooping, bending, kneeling and crouching. Frequently exposed to infectious, contagious, or blood borne diseases. May be exposed to hazardous fumes, body fluids and tissues.
