Snapshot of Daily Duties:

Hours: PRN position (PRN - Variable Start Times, Routine Lab hours Monday - Friday 5am - 3pm)

  • This is a Grossing Histotech position. MUST meet all CLIA requirements for grossing/High Complexity Testing (see must haves). All tissue will be gastrointestinal biopsy and polyp specimens only, with training to be approved by the Lab Director.
  • Precisely and accurately perform a variety of routine and specialized histology techniques and procedures, including specimen accessioning, grossing (prosecting), tissue processing, embedding, microtomy, performing special stains, operating H&E autostainer, and operating instrumentation for immunohistochemical stains. 
  • Prepare precision cuts (sections) using a microtome, and stains according to established procedure for routine and special stains.  
  • Understand proper tissue handling to minimize cross contamination.
  • Maintain stock of necessary reagents for all stains and processing utilized in the department. 
  • Maintain equipment, instruments, and cleanliness of working area. 
  • Assist with accession specimens, including assigning case numbers to pathology specimens, verifying specimen jars correspond to the pathology requisition.  
  • Assist in retrieving blocks and slides for review and filing slides and blocks
  • Assist in data entry with the lab LIS system. 
  • Comply with all state, federal, CLIA, CAP, and other professional regulations as well as department rules, polices, and procedural manuals, including adherence to safety regulations. 
  • Comply with OSHA and regulatory requirements by following established procedures in order to maintain a safe laboratory environment and to meet all accreditation standards. 

The Must Haves:

  • Meet Qualifications for CLIA High Complexity Testing Personnel (§ 493.1489 Standard; Testing personnel qualifications)

  • Have earned an associate degree in a laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution or—
  • At least 60 semester hours, or equivalent, from an accredited institution that, at a minimum, includes either—
    • (1) Twenty-four (24) semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses; or
    • (2) Twenty-four (24) semester hours of science courses that include—
    • (i) Six (6) semester hours of chemistry 
    • (ii) Six (6) semester hours of biology; and
    • (iii) Twelve (12) semester hours of chemistry, biology, or medical laboratory technology in any combination
  • HT(ASCP) certification or registry eligible.
  • Previous experience in an anatomic pathology and histology laboratory.
