Must have paraprofessional license, temporary para license, or be willing to get temporary para license through the ROE.
Strong proficiency in mathematics, including concepts up to Algebra and have the ability to accurately support students in problem-solving and mathematical reasoning are preferred.

Title: Program Assistant

Job Goal: To assist the special education teacher with classroom and student needs which will allow students to benefit from 

program goals and objectives

Knowledge/Experience:    

• Successful completion of state test for paraprofessional       

      and ISBE approval required OR

• 60 semester hours or Associates Degree from a NCATE college or university 

• Background with children experiences helpful

• Other qualifications as the administration may find

appropriate and acceptable

Physical Requirements: Ability to perform normal responsibilities of this job; Ability to lift 30—50 lbs.

Exemption Status: Non-exempt (eligible for overtime pay)

Classroom Responsibilities:

• Work with individual students or small/large groups of students to 

reinforce learning of material or skills initially introduced by the teacher 

• Display positive communication skills to enhance good classroom relationships with students and teacher

•  Assist the teacher in devising special strategies for reinforcing concepts 

or skills based on an understanding of individual students, their needs, interests, and abilities

• Construct classroom materials and/or worksheets related to academic areas

• Operate and care for equipment used in the classroom for instructional

purposes

• Help students master instructional materials assigned by the teacher

• Distribute and collect workbooks, papers, and other materials for

instruction

• Guide independent study, enrichment work, and remedial work set up

and assigned by the teacher

• Assist with the supervision of students in all school directed activities

• Keep bulletin boards and other classroom learning displays up-to-date

when applicable

• Assist with group activities such as drill work, reading aloud, and story telling

• Develop communication skills with students

• Assist students in the library or media center, when applicable

• Collect data, check notebooks, correct papers, and supervise testing and make-up

work as assigned by the teacher

• Check and record student attendance

• Collect and record collection of money

• Help students with their clothing, when applicable

• Assist with lunch, snack, and clean up routines

• Assist with wash up and toilet routines, when applicable

• Alert teacher to special information about an individual student,

pertaining to the school program

• Serve as a source of information and help to any substitute teacher assigned

in the absence of the teacher

Professional Responsibilities:

• Maintain the same high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality

of information about students as is expected of fully licensed teachers

• Participate in required meetings and in-service training programs, as 

assigned

• Communicate with appropriate school personnel on needs of students

• Develop his/her own professional growth through reading, workshops,

in-services, conferences and/or coursework

• Maintain a good attendance record

• Conform to School Board Policy 

•  Perform other duties, as necessary, to provide Program Assistant services as 

assigned by the Department Coordinator, Principal or the administrative designee.

Terms of Employment:

• Student Attendance Days & Institute days (same schedule as paraproressionals)

• 6.25 hours per day as appropriate -7:45am-2:45pm

Annual evaluation conducted by Department Coordinator and Administration
