POSITION: Language Instructor
SALARY: $21.82-$25.30, per hour
REPORTS TO: Language Program Manager
LOCATION: Nespelem, WA
Basic Functions: Non Exempt. The Language Instructor will coordinate preparation, development and use of education materials of one of the traditional languages (ns lxcin, nxa?amxcin, titooqatimt) of the Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation also known as the Colville Confederated Tribes (CCT).
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Education and Training:
- Typically requires an AA degree and 2 years’ experience with teaching and development of culture and language based curriculum OR a high school diploma or equivalent and 60 months’ experience teaching and development of culture and language based curriculum.
- May Require a valid driver's license and be eligible for the Tribes' vehicle insurance and maintain throughout employment.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Requires education and/or experience with the study of Linguistics and the phonetic alphabet, or at minimum, a willingness to learn.
- Requires basic knowledge of the history and culture of the CCT.
- Requires knowledge of the organizational structure of the CCT and policies and procedures manual of the CCT.
- Requires knowledge of computer programs to create documents with Word, desk-top publishing programs, multi-media programs, interne, and video-teleconferencing preferred.
- Requires good communication skills and previous experience with verbal, written, interviewing, and public speaking presentation.
- Requires competencies to organize and implement community engagement/learning, assessments, and strategic planning.
- Requires the ability to collaborate with various departments, partners, or individual members of the CCT.
- Requires the ability to independently perform all of the duties of the position.
- Requires the ability to accurately take and transcribe notes and/or meeting minutes/recollections.
- Requires the ability to work with tribal elders in a culturally appropriate manner.
- Requires the ability to mentor, guide, and teach new learners of the language. Must be able to read, write, and speak proficiently in one of the languages of the CCT.
- Requires the ability to function indoors in an office environment engaged in work of primarily a sedentary nature.
- Requires ambulatory ability to sit for extended periods of time, to utilize microcomputers and peripheral equipment, accomplish other desktop work, and to move to various office and community locations.
- Requires the ability to use near vision to read printed materials.
- Requires auditory ability to carry on conversations in person and over the phone.
- Requires the ability to retrieve work materials from overhead, waist, and ground level files.
- Requires manual and finger dexterity to write, use a pointing device and keyboard at an acceptable rate that meets department deadlines and accuracy standards, operate microcomputer, and use other standardized office equipment, almost constantly requiring repetitive motions.
- This position may require rigorous physical activity such as hiking, lifting/moving heavy objects, and digging during cultural outings/activities.
Special Conditions:
- Position is identified as Safety Sensitive and is subject to pre-employment drug test.
- Must pass a background clearance (Tribal, State) and maintain clearance throughout employment.
- Tribal Member and Indian preference will apply. Preference will also be given honorably to discharged Veterans who are minimally qualified.
Note: Pursuant to Tribal Policy, if this position is safety sensitive it is subject to pre-employment drug testing. In addition, this position is subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing.

If required of this position, you must possess and maintain a valid Washington State driver’s license and be eligible for the Tribes’ Vehicle Insurance. In addition, this position may be subject to pre-employment background clearances. If applicable, these clearances must be maintained throughout employment.
