About the Department

Work with, supervise and instruct other members of the grading crew in the grading and construction of streets and roadways as directed by the immediate supervisor. Perform yearly evaluations in cooperation with Highway Supervisors. Participate in management meetings when requested.

Position Duties

  • Supervise the work of grading crew personnel in the grading and construction of streets and roadways. Ability to plan, organize, direct, review, and evaluate work of employees.
  • Knowledge to operate transits, GPS receivers, levels, calculators and computers along with other surveying/engineering related equipment. Working knowledge of basic trigonometry/mathematics, ability to interpret drawings and specifications, and ability to perform routine and basic design Work. Perform mathematical computations, records research, and performs other clerical tasks.
  • Working knowledge of excavation, grading and base preparations; compaction specifications; grade staking methods; catch basin, water valve, manhole adjustment techniques; bituminous paving procedures; seal coat and shouldering.
  • Ability to read and interpret construction plans and working drawings. Ability to interpret the State of Wisconsin Standard Specifications for Road and Bridge Construction. Maintain and complete comprehensive records and reports.
  • Ability to perform related safety requirements and practices of the WI Department of Transportation, the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices and work zone safety. Working knowledge of occupational hazards and safe work practices.
  • Ability to maintain and complete comprehensive records and reports.
  • Capable of driving and operating trucks equipped with plow, wing and sander and also be capable of operating any other equipment required to maintain the section. Winter maintenance may include but is not limited to removing snow with plows and sands/salts icy roads, and installs,
    repairs or replace snow fence.
  • Assist Highway Superintendents in the preparation of cost estimates for projects.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent. 
  • Combination of training and experience equivalent to four years’ experience in the grading and construction of streets and roadways.
  • Valid Commercial Driver’s license, Class A, B, C, D – ability to obtain N endorsement.
  • Understands and effectively carries out oral and written instructions.

Other Qualifications

  • Work is performed in a shed and outdoor settings, including but not limited to construction sites. Ability to frequently lift up to 50 pounds, but must be capable of lifting 100 pounds. A combination of sitting and standing postures may be required, use of hands, ability to reach with hands and
    arms; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required for this job include distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Ability to regularly work five eight-hour days and/or four ten-hour days and
    the ability to adapt to working non-standard work hours, including weekends, late evenings, early mornings and holidays.
  • Ability to work in an environment with occasional exposure to unpleasant odors and non-toxic fumes. Ability to work in an environment with exposure to adverse temperature and/or humidity extremes. Must be able to operate construction equipment, snow removal equipment, trucks, tools and equipment.
