The Dalton School, a progressive K-12 gender-inclusive school in Manhattan’s Upper East Side, is consistently recognized as one of the preeminent independent day schools in the nation. Known for its child-centered approach and an exceptional, inspiring faculty, Dalton enrolls over 1,300 students with approximately 350 faculty and staff. Guided by the Dalton Plan, the foundation of a Dalton education, our faculty meets each student’s evolving needs, interests, and abilities. Dalton challenges each student to develop intellectual independence, creativity, curiosity, and a sense of responsibility toward others both within the School and in the broader community.

We are seeking an engaging, creative, and technically skilled Computer Science Instructor to teach a project-based coding course for 9th-grade students beginning March 2026 and ending June 2026. This introductory course emphasizes web development (HTML/CSS/JS) and personal expression through programming, guiding students through hands-on projects that prioritize authentic audience, creativity, and joy in coding.

In the first semester, students built personal portfolio websites using HTML and CSS, which they update regularly via GitHub. These websites also house their reflective journals and project logs. In the second semester, the focus shifts to JavaScript, where students build interactive experiences like digital greeting cards, mini-games, randomizers, and playful "code sketches".

Responsibilities:

  • Teach four sections of Computer Science 1 on Mondays and Thursdays between 8:00 AM–3:30 PM
  • Offer one additional day per week for "Lab" (1-on-1 student support sessions)
  • Lead hands-on, engaging lessons.
  • Meet students where they are—supporting beginners while fostering technical growth.
  • Review, critique, and support student work with regular feedback.
  • Attend occasional Zoom check-ins and faculty meetings.
  • Collaborate with other instructors in refining and evolving the course.

Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated proficiency with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript, and git version control.
  • Experience teaching or mentoring young people in coding or creative tech.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Design, Education, or related field; graduate degree preferred.
  • Facility with and willingness to learn educational technologies.
