About the Department
The City of Jefferson is currently accepting applications for a Mechanic within the Central Maintenance Division of the Public Works Department. This position maintains and repairs both gas and diesel vehicles and equipment including: cars, trucks, buses, construction equipment, fire trucks, dump trucks and a variety of other equipment used by city employees.
Position Duties
Inspects and repairs equipment, gas and diesel vehicles; coordinates equipment and vehicle repairs with outsourced vendors when necessary.
Assists in researching and compiling a detailed list of materials, supplies and equipment in addition to procuring small to medium dollar items in accordance with city purchasing guidelines; picks up parts at local distributors; operates tools and equipment; and maintain computer records of vehicle and equipment repair histories.
Minimum Qualifications
Physical: Ability to work in extreme weather conditions; lift and carry up to 100 pounds; stand for extended periods; physically access and move about the interior and exterior of various vehicles and equipment for inspection and repairs; and work a variable work schedule with sometimes long hours, including weekends and holidays.
Mental: Ability to follow oral and written instructions; interpret sketches, specifications, operating and repair manuals; maintain detailed work records; and establish and maintain effective working relationships.
Requires an accredited Associate's degree in automotive or diesel repair and five (5) years related experience in automotive trade at the full skill craft level or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Must obtain a valid Missouri Class B CDL, with passenger and air brake endorsement, within six months of hire.
Knowledge of the methods, materials, tools, and techniques used in the repair of automotive equipment including gasoline and diesel engines; hydraulic and electrical systems; air conditioning; as well as the ability to weld and fabricate metal and to operate handheld computer diagnostic equipment.
Other Qualifications
Requires employee to provide their own hand tools and tool box with a minimum of ¼", 3/8 ", and ½" drive metric and standard socket and wrenches.
This position's normal work hours are Monday thru Friday, 6:30 AM to 3:00 PM. Employees must be available to come in for an emergencies such as snow removal operations, natural disasters, and public safety emergencies.
This positions is anticipated to start at the annual salary of $52,121.81 and includes a comprehensive benefit package which includes paid health, life and dental insurance, as well as paid vacation, sick and holiday leave. Applicants who have more experience may be offered the position at a slightly higher rate of pay.
