Crosswalk Guards are responsible for providing a safe and secure crosswalk for elementary children at designated school crosswalks in HRM.
We are recruiting Regular Part-time Crosswalk Guards(s) who are bargaining members of CUPE Local 4814 for positions located in the following areas. Should we not be able to fill the vacancies listed below, we will accept applications from the general public for these same locations. We are also recruiting spares from all geographical locations.

- Safely escorts elementary school children across busy crosswalks throughout HRM.
- Observes traffic and assess the appropriate time to stop vehicles for pedestrians to cross safely.
- Provides clear instructions to children on when and how to cross safely.
- Uses a handheld stop sign to effectively control vehicle traffic and ensure children can cross safely.
- Demonstrates respect and inclusivity in interactions with children, families, and community members.
- Adheres to and promotes compliance with all policies and procedures related to crosswalk operations.
- Abides by pedestrian traffic laws at the crosswalk.
- Reports any problems or safety concerns arising at the assigned crosswalk to the Crossing Guard Supervisor or Program Manager.
Education and Experience:
- Experience working with children is an asset.
- Customer Service experience is an asset.
- Must be available Monday through Friday.
- Access to reliable and timely transportation (may be required to attend various locations throughout the workday).
- Ability to stand or walk 2 - 3 ½ hours a day and be exposed to all weather conditions.
- Ability to maintain control under pressure.
- Ability to work with minimum supervision.
- Possess adequate vision and hearing.

Please note – Testing may be conducted as a component of the selection process to assess technical and job specific knowledge. Candidates who are selected for testing, may be tested in a group setting, scheduled at the employer’s discretion.

WORK STATUS: Regular, Seasonal (10-months per year)
HOURS OF WORK: The current daily scheduled hours for this position are Monday - Friday; 2 – 3.5 hours per day.
SALARY: The hourly rate for this position is $17.75 in accordance with the collective agreement between CUPE Local 4814 and Halifax Regional Municipality.
WORK LOCATION: Various locations throughout HRM.
