Purpose

The Assistant Director of Visitor and Volunteer Services provides leadership and oversight for the museum’s frontline visitor experience, volunteer program, and group/corporate ticket sales. This position supervises frontline team members, manages the volunteer office, and ensures that every guest encounter reflects the Blanton’s mission and commitment to outstanding service. The role integrates visitor services, volunteer engagement, sales strategies, and data analysis to strengthen audience loyalty, grow earned revenue, and expand the museum’s presence in the community and tourism markets.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily operations of Visitor Services to ensure exceptional customer service, efficient ticketing, and a welcoming environment.

  • Supervise, coach, and evaluate frontline staff, driving strong performance in ticket and membership sales.

  • Develop and implement training programs and sales strategies that balance revenue goals with outstanding guest experience.

  • Lead the Volunteer Office, including recruitment, onboarding, training, scheduling, recognition, and retention strategies.

  • Build and maintain relationships with corporate partners, tour operators, and tourism stakeholders to drive group and corporate sales.

  • Represent the museum at trade shows, conventions, and community events, serving as a key ambassador for the institution.

  • Look for opportunities to partner and table events at the University of Texas at Austin, collaborating with UT departments on outreach initiatives and recruiting and engaging UT students.

  • Collect, analyze, and report on visitation, sales, membership conversions, and volunteer engagement to inform strategy.

  • Ensure accuracy and efficiency in ticketing, membership, and volunteer databases, maintaining compliance with policies.

  • Partner with the marketing team to leverage audience insights and analytics to grow revenue, engagement, and visitor satisfaction

  • Assist with staffing on-site and off-site museum and community events and programs.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in museum studies, arts administration, business, or related field.

  • At least five 5 years of progressively responsible experience in sales, visitor services, or customer service leadership.

  • 3-5 years’ experience supervising staff and managing volunteers.

  • Strong proficiency in CRM/ticketing systems (e.g., Altru, Tessitura, Siriusware, or equivalent).

  • Advanced proficiency in Excel.

  • Demonstrated ability to collect, analyze, and present data for decision-making.

  • Strong interpersonal, communication, and organizational skills.

Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in museum studies, business, nonprofit management, or related field.

  • Experience in museums, cultural institutions, or higher education.

  • Knowledge of group sales, corporate outreach, or tourism partnerships.

  • Demonstrated success in sales training, customer engagement, or volunteer retention strategies.

Salary Range

$78,000 + depending on qualifications

Working Conditions

  • Standard Office Environment

  • Regular work shift: Tuesday - Saturday with occasional Sunday shifts

  • Evening and weekend work is required

  • Occasional off-site work for events and programs

The retirement plan for this position is Teacher Retirement System of Texas (TRS), subject to the position being at least 20 hours per week and at least 135 days in length.
